This recent interview touches a bit on the topic of social network vs. social media.

Peertube falls into the latter camp, but has a content funding issue. Aside from some gaming live-streams or similar, there just isn't much reason to make a video of what usually could be an easy microblog post, unless someone pays you to do it (like on Youtube or Tiktok).

This problem is ultimatly what stops Peertube from becoming more than a place where people mirror stuff from other social media platforms.

If nobody uses it it's literally the worst

Are there minecraft videos? Is there a multi instance search? Is there a web ui that allows me to navigate like how lemmy works?

I tried it once and I was confused and there was little or no content, but it could have been the instance I was on.

Similar experience. And not much better an experience as a potential creator looking for a good home for a few educational videos, ime.

I've observed that people like the YouTube algorithm. Even privacy conscious/self hosting types.

…And that seems fundamentally orthogonal to peertube.

Maybe it can integrate with Lemmy/Piefed for categorized recommendations or something?

Awesome video! @blinmaster@peertube.wtf reminds me of Charley or Critical with the voice.

Youtube is a big old Canyonero with a fat tankful of gasoline and drives wherever it wants. We need a bunch of users to come to peertube, each with a thimbleful of gasoline. Eventually the peertube tank will be full as well.

If a peertube instance has next to zero content fails in the forest, does anyone care?

Sadly, of no one of using it than by definition it isn't better than YouTube. Users create the content. The content makes the experience.

No users means no content. No content means no mass appeal. No mass appeal means no forward momentum, which circles us back to #1... No content.

Saying Peertube is a "better YouTube" just isn't factual when discussing services where users and content define the experience.

most of my youtube usage is from an amazon tv device. even if its app store had peertube I have channels that are my go to searches for their content.

I think this is a great idea and I go over and look at it every now and then but the type of content I watch on youtube is not just on peertube yet.

That's fair. I've been following people not content lately. Its been working out.

Can you expand on that a bit?

I've always used youtube through the subscribed list. I don't really use the recommendations, so I think of that as "following people" and not blindly following the content the algorithm throws at me. But I'm having a hard time finding people to follow on peertube. I know there's the sepia thing, but with that you can find content, not people. I get that its decentralized and all that, but is there no list of creators who use peertube?

I'm very dumb and confused about all this. I'm just trying to get rid of youtube lol. Turns out it's very difficult.

Yes, as someone who watches a lot of technology or retrocomputing content. There is a decent amount of crossover there. @veronicaexplains@tilvids.com , @rees@makertube.net , though surprisingly I haven't found @ActionRetro@bitbang.social. Without Sean on PeerTube, there just isn't enough totally normal computing for an e-waste connoisseur.

But if your interest lie out of that narrow niche, it's a bit of a content desert.

edit It's up to the communities moderator @AbnormalHumanBeing@lemmy.world. But a post linked in the sidebar or stickied. Containing a list of YouTube content creators and their peertube accounts. Or just notable peer tube content creators would be a great way to get people on boarded. I'm thinking of doing something similar for my communities.

I have wondered how the community would react if someone would start syncing popular YT content to PT. though it would be "illegal", it might the the push for some viewers to release their grip from YT and allow content creators to see a better path.
