Unless you have a working phone already. Then use that.

I'm currently in that boat. My phone is functional and I do not yet need to upgrade (Google Pixel 6a)

But at the same time I've been trying to rid myself of relying on American companies and services in my life.
My phone, being a Pixel, is a Google device, running Google services, and receiving updates from Google. I can instal alternative apps like Proton Mail and Ecosia search, but at it's core it's still a Google device.

Fairphone is European, and that is part of the reason why I want to see them become succesful. We need to forster more home-grown tech companies to counter our reliance on America.

As a bonus I also higly respect their mission statement. We need more repairable devices on the market, and I also want their company to be succesful to prove that that demand exists.

So I've been considering upgrading, even though I technically don't need an upgrade quite yet. Maybe I'll wait a few more months for the price to drop to 450 euro-ish and then I'll switch.

    [FAIRPHONE 6 REVIEW]

MrMobile very much relies on people (like me!) who are interested in the constant release of new technology โ€“ so Iโ€™ve always thought it would be hypocritical of me to focus on ease of repair, or sustainability.

But when a product combines those aspirational qualities with new thinking about how we should be using our technology โ€ฆ well thatโ€™s something I canโ€™t help but try out.

This is the Fairphone 6: a mobile device from the Amsterdam-based company of the same name thatโ€™s modular, repairable, and made to be mindful. In other words: the opposite of pretty much every other smartphone.

    [ABOUT MRMOBILE'S FAIRPHONE 6 REVIEW]

This video was produced following one week with a Fairphone 6 review sample provided by Fairphone and tested on T-Mobile in NYC.

MrMobile does not offer manufacturers the opportunity to preview, edit or approve content before publication. Neither Fairphone nor any other manufacturer provided compensation in exchange for this coverage.

I've really enjoyed mine and no complaints about /e/os either. Switched from a flagship Samsung as part of an effort to de-google, and the transition has been pretty smooth.

Good to know, I'm a step behind you.

What about banking or other apps, do they work or have the 'doesn't work on this phone' stuff?

Hit or miss. All the big names worked fine, my local credit union doesn't, but their mobile site is functional so I just added a shortcut to an app drawer. The upside for apps is the /e/os app lounge has a tab for 'open-source' results when searching which has been nice for lifestyle apps that are simple and don't shove subscriptions in your face.

Both my wife and I have FP6s with e/os (I'm technical and love tinkering, she just wants something that works)

We both absolutely love our phones! It just works. Had an issue with one app, for a virtual museum card in our country, only so far that required google services and did not work with mircrog. Everything else from banking to government apps works flawlessly.

Do you know if Android Auto works with /e/os?

I'm using regular android on my fp6, but given everything google doesโ€“

I wish there was an easier way to try it out without the need to wipe/move everything.

You have to install a few google apps to make it work. There's a guide on how to do it.

I haven't tried it myself as I find it counterintuitive to regoogle a degoogled phone, but people in the murena forum report it works.

FP seemingly abandoned Australia with the FP5 and the 3g cutoff.

Not quite sure how I feel about them now.

I have come to dislike mine. Stock Android bc I couldn't get it with /e/ and my old phone was blowing up. Didn't dare to lose the Google backup.

Weekly freezes requiring hard resets, Bluetooth issues, internet issues, graphical stuttering. I got it for the replaceable battery, but damn, now I don't want it at all.

I've been using iodeOS since release and have had zero issues

I hear good things about /e/OS, too, but the switch is a risky time investment and I don't know if my banking apps will continue to work. I think I'll have to switch an even older phone first, seeing as my Pixel has outgrown its shell.

Still on my fp4, still have ghost touches, still upset about their painfully slow update cycle and their abysmal customer service
