If you face your phone into a welding helmet with automated shades it triggers constantly due to the IR laser constantly shining on your face to map it. Its usually located next to the camera lens since that's what is used for auto focusing.

Installed the CBP app mentioned in the article just so I could leave a 1 star review

Edit: the weird spellings around my blurred out name is due to my Pixel phone's Magic Eraser doing odd things

Man I cant wait for graphene to make their phone. I don't even want to give Google the money for a new Pixel now.

They need to connect with the former Essentials Phone staff. It was a former Google employee venture. It was a good clean stock android phone, that didn't get enough attention. They'd be the perfect fit for graphene or a Linux phone

Anybody who is not aware by now that Google is one of the most evil institutions on the face of the planet isn't going to be persuaded by yet another example, I'm pretty sure.

You are probably right. Although I have seen a lot of people I'm my community become much more privacy aware and even hostile towards flock cameras when they couldn't care less a year ago.

Eh. Possibly a fair point. I've got a hair trigger when it comes to spotting unethical corporate behaviour, and I'm always looking and waiting for the moral failure that seems inevitable when money enters the picture. Maybe I'm overestimating how much other people watch out for this.

If you expected anything else you don't pay attention. Only reason they wouldn't support it is if they say it as something that would fail and the criminals prosecuted something not going to happen without a revolution never for "morality".

They're just helping catalog and organize all the world's information guys! Nevermind that they don't want to catalog any information on the location of ICE officers, they don't consider that part of the world's information! /s

I mean, I don't know what to say other than this is definitely showing whose side they're on.

Of course they are, but who are the shitbirds at Google working on it specifically? Managers and devs. They're among us, they are on the internet and know exactly what's going on. Shameful. Imagine this is your career and you get a promotion for it. Pathetic.

Any links to the apps in question?

This is why installing software (side loading?) is so important on our own devices. Who cares if google has a problem? Its my device, I should be able to do what I want with it, including install software.

    Concerned free speech experts

But this isn't a matter of free speech, is it? Google isn't a government entity, and as such, aren't they exempt from freedom of speech? The same thing happens with nearly every social media platform. They CHOOSE to let you in. They don't have to. Google has CHOSEN to support ICE personnel instead of the people. Shitty and morally bankrupt, yes. I'm not arguing that. But why is this a first amendment issue?

People are lead to believe that the FA extends to all facets of their lives. I think that's one of the reasons why they let corporations get away with so much deregulation. People often don't realize how much less responsibility corporations have than them for the same actions. I still get shocked pikachu faces when I tell people what limited liability is and they ask how is this shit legal.

Corporations aren't people and they don't act in ethical manner you might expect. Any corporate action that isn't furthering its profits one way or another should be considered a coincidence or a mistake. Very few firms, typically smaller, private, and or with special ideological predisposition fall outside.

Technically you could load an ICE warning app from another source for now. But not for long because Google is about to require that all Android developers register with (and pay) Google and get Google's approval, even if they distribute their apps entirely through non-Google channels. I fully expect that developers of left-wing activist apps will mysteriously fail to be approved by Google.

We desperately need an open mobile phone platform that isn't controlled by a single megacorporation.

There are apps that let you mark police on the map. Waze, maps, etc..... why is ICE so special here? If ICE trackers are not allowed, then why allow police reporting? Next is flock camera reporting..... maybe all white men with 100 mil or more are excluded from lookups next
