Tbh I dont hate this. Its already a company I trust with this information so no new info is required.

Where it gets sticky for me is that providing private info to an Internet company is not the same as flashing an id card at the store as they can keep it forever.

That and the likes of reddit (for example not singling them out) are offloading this task to companies that have no gdpr compliance.

It's more that people who don't want a credit card are screwed from this.

    Indeed.

Reminds me of the Android Market Play Store and not being able to use PayPal back yonder and having to use a throwaway top-up, debit card if you wanted to buy apps. Ewww.

Typical UK government solution look at a problem and find the absolute worst solution possible and run with it

This is an US-based news article. They don't know the difference between credit and debit cards. Debit cards will work, too. (As per this article.) And you basically get them thrown at you with any bank account.

Update: Debits do not work. You need a credit card.

Huh, you’re right. Just checked my account again and I now see this message:

Under the UK Online Safety Act, Valve is required to verify that you are 18 or older before accessing mature sexual content. If you wish to do so, please add a valid UK credit card to your account and afterwards update the Mature Content Preferences.

That wasn’t there a few hours ago.

Yeah, I think this is pretty poor from Steam. Especially if this expands in scope beyond the pornslop games to include stuff on the level of Cyberpunk or Baldurs Gate - which I assume it would have to per OSAs standards.

I don't agree that it's mild. They explicitly will require credit cards as per the law, debit cards won't work for it, which is a huge deal.

I mean children can get debit cards. Having a bank account has never and should never be a bench mark of age.

Heaven sake I had a bank account at 12 years old.

Unsecured Credit should realistically be straight up illegal to give to children.

So no it's not a huge deal at fucking all. Unless you have a sizeable amount of financial literacy. And don't understand what a credit vs debit card actually mean.

At best you can make a weak argument that having to get a credit card is annoying. But 300-500 dollar low limit free credit card with no requirements or annual fees. Is available basically from every bank in the world.

Get it and throw it in a draw to rot for literally forever. Hell you can even cut it in half it and freeze the card. Making it a zero security risk.

Then you have a unusable, frozen account. That exists purely as proof that your old enough to have a credit card. Even if it's stolen it's unusable and still perfectly safe.

So you don't even have to care about data breaches beyond what you currently do.

Not everyone can get a credit card. I have no debt at all and own two cars and my house outright. I've got a job that pays well and money in the bank. Tried to get a credit card and was turned down 5 times because i failed the credit check... Since I dont really have a credit score.

I dont need a credit card though. Only wanted it for a trip I was taking for the travel points. So I said fuck it and continued my life. But requiring a credit card which people like me cant get for this is bullshit.

How do you expect Steam to work against this? This is not a decision that Valve has any word on, its a decision by government. The only thing that Valve could do here is, remove those games for that country. But that is not a solution. If anything, the citizens of the UK should do something, if possible.
