I've tried to do research and found games that exist, but not many opinions on them. I don't wanna rely on one singular opinion just to find out that the game is for them but not me. Classicube ie too simple. Cubys is like Minecraft's Arch, and Luanti with Mineclonia seems the most promising, but have done the least research from. Eaglercraft isn't fully open-source liscense-wize, Android java launchers like Mojo use too many resources, and PC launchers require a Minecraft install and a Microsoft account. I don't wanna just straight up pirate the game directly either. How are your experiences woth those complete alternatives?

Luanti is deeply modded, has a large selection of games (including the ones mimicking Minecraft), and a strong programming community.

I'm honestly surprised you researched Luanti the least.

My experience drove me to just pirate minecraft. The alternatives are ok, but they are not very polished, or they don't scratch the same itch. Minecraft really does just have that sauce.

I've never been able to get it to work from the high seas.

    Luanti is great.

Vintage Story is paid but awesome.

Also check out Veloren and OpenVoxel.

I have tried Minetest, but that was years ago. It probably needed some plugins to feel more alive.

They stopped making the community focus on modding the base game (i.e. Minetest Game), and just went 'Hey, you go make yer games; and mods just follow behind with compatibility for certain games.' For some reason the devs let rip and now we have very strong Minecraft clones, as well as lots of creative output.

    There's the Backrooms game even.

Voxelibre, a luanti fork, is pretty great. My young lad plays it almost exclusively. It also runs on a potato which is great

To ensure no misunderstandings here, Voxelibre is running on Luanti as a 'game'. It's not a separate fork. It will be forked from the 'Minetest Game' which is the default (basic, unmodded) engine on Luanti.

The Luanti title screen gets substituted by the title screen of whatever game was selected/played before Luanti was closed. It makes Luanti itself like a 'console'.

Cubic Odyssey scratches the itch for me. It's more like a 3D Starbound, but it's all blocks. It's not open source though.

Oh and it's janky as hell

Been playing Luanti Voxelibre, and been very content with its creative mode. But it spawns far too little ores, which makes the survival mode a pain. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong, idk.

yes but except you are a diehard free software fan there is no reason to not just play minecraft. it has basically no DRM, source code is no longer unobfuscated and it can be easily modded.

Idk anything about it, I'd assume you can't connect to servers or smth on a pirated version

Vintage Story is a Minecraft-like that's fantastic. It's only source available but it's fully replaced Minecraft for me. It feels like "Minecraft for adults" since it's a lot more intense in terms of survival and building

There is no good open source alternative in my experience, but hytale is a decent non-microsoft one

Not open source, but Vintage Story is very good.

Mineclonia (running on Luanti) is quite complete for a WIP, and tries to mimic Minecraft as much as possible in the engine. (Disclaimer: I have contributed to this repo)
