What the fuck makes Apple think they have the right to not only spy on my private communications, but to also censor conversations between me and my wife?

Apple says the detection is done on-device, but it's closed source and I can't think of a way to test it so I wouldn't trust it

The calls are encrypted with AES-256 so you'd have to have the phone decrypting the stream and then connecting to an Apple server for nudity verification without on-device detection. It's entirely possible to verify/intercept what's being communicated from a device even if it is closed source.

Feature detection in images is extremely light weight so it seems that it would be fairly trivial to detect someones wang before the stream is encrypted in the first place. There is likely already a ton of processing done on raw camera data before it's encrypted and sent off-device anyway.

Who is to say it isnt on device but sending all the data on again? It being closed source is the issue. It existing is the issue.

Yep. It could even be sending metadata back
"Child Nudity detection at 2026-10-10T10:10:10" etc

I mean that is the perfect selling point for monitoring but there are pictures of me naked as a child on my mother's fridge, it shoupdn't auto flag as a criminal activity. Not arguing against you just adding a note.

Looks like it’s an option you have to turn on or can turn off.

Because photos and videos are analyzed on your device, Apple doesn't receive an indication that sensitive content was detected and doesn't get access to the photos or videos.

That doesn't mean that - It could be on device AND send an indication...

I'm like 99% certain there's an option to turn it off.

That shit should always be opt in, not opt out.

This is actually do to government policies being put in place in the U.K., Australia and such. In those countries if a user has a child account (under 13 years old) certain safety features are turned on by default now in those countries, and the parent can choose to turn them off. If your account is over 18 years old, has a credit card attached to it, or I think there is a couple other ways it will automatically assume you are over 18 and you don't have to prove it (otherwise you would have to scan your ID to get your Apple account to have you listed as an adult). In the U.S. you don't have to prove it, and it is opt in by the users.

So it's a catch 22, I think it should be opt in every where, but no one is winning a political campaign on saying 12 year olds should be able to send or receive nudes without their parents knowinh about it.

No thousands of people, influencers, journalists, the fucking Woz wrote, called and organised online protest and petitions and forced the world’s biggest corporation to back off.

This is actually more of a !goodnewseveryone@piefed.social / !upliftingnews@lemmy.world story than boring or dystopian.

There is plenty of that going around these days, but this isn’t it. Yes, they might try again and I’m confident that they will fail each time they try to do this.

Collective action. Americans aren’t used to that, but even the fat cats at Apple recognise it when they’re up against it.

Just reading the headline, it sounds like it's gonna freeze the frame when you drop your pants so everyone on the other side can get a good look and take their screenshots.

You can ring Apple for so many other things. Don’t choose stuff you can’t prove, or stuff they had to very publicly backtrack because they were forced to listen to their user base.
