S18E1 "Frank Marries a Corpse"

Attempting an AVIF instead if a GIF or WebP. I am curious how it displays for you and what browser/app you're using.

It’s animated on iOS Blorp app

Seeing a static image. Using summit (Android 15), Fairphone 5. The app has AVIF support.

Looks fine on Jerboa and Brave

Is it animated in Jerboa for you? For me, it just appears as a static image of the first frame of the animation. But if you tap on the image in Jerboa to open the file in a web browser, it plays the animation in the web browser fine.

Piefed viewing on safari or mlem. And only seeing a still image.

Interesting, as that makes it sound like this is a macOS issue or something. But according to the Wikipedia page, it is supported:

WebKit added AVIF support on 5 March 2021. Safari for iOS 16 and macOS Ventura added support for AVIF; iOS 16 was released on 12 September 2022[15] and macOS Ventura on 24 October 2022.[16] Safari 16.4 retroactively added AVIF support for macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur.[17]

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVIF#Support

Though as I have seen with WebP, just because something claims to support an image filetype doesn't mean it supports animations in that filetype.

EDIT: It doesn't work for me either when I view it from your instance (web browser on Android or Linux). You have to click on the image to open it in a new tab, then it plays back animated there. I guess animated AVIF is just another thing that PyLova supports that PieFed doesn't.

It works on voyager on the same phone others did not. Too bad it is about the only thing that works on voyager for me.

There was a time when Voyager was ahead of just about everything, having many certain features that other Lemmy apps lacked. But in recent years, as these apps got updates with new novel features, it seems that most popular apps have caught up and now have features that Voyager lacks.

How does it work when the image is embedded in a comment like this? Does this play back correctly for you in your various apps?

Static in mlem, animated in voyager.

Mlem devs reopened the ticket for avif support because of this thread.

    Neat: https://github.com/mlemgroup/mlem/issues/2584

Looks like the ticket had been closed because static AVIF images were working, but they reopened it now because they realized that animated AVIF images like this are not working.

If any devs are reading this thread and want more animated AVIF files for testing:

The image is playing back correctly for me in Librewolf on Linux in the normal web UI for my instance (which is PyLova) and in the default Lemmy UI in some random Lemmy instance I tried.

On Android, it is also working fine in the default PyLova web UI in IronFox, as well as in Thunder, Blorp, and Voyager. It's just a static image in Jerboa, Summit, Raccoon, and Eternity.
