The French government plans to increase the number of third-level student places and make €4 billion ($4.5 billion) available for high-school renovations as it tries to end nationwide protests that have turned violent in recent weeks.

High-school students began to demonstrate in mid-September to denounce overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages and outdated buildings. Their blockades and marches morphed into nationwide cost of living protests earlier this month that drew more than half a million people and descended into riots, arson and looting.

What are they going to do about the police escalating throwing grenades blowing the hands of kids? How about the agent provocateurs?

I think at this point the protests have grown beyond education and have now started to become about authoritarianism and police brutality. You lost your chance for the easy fix because you tried to beat people into submission first.

This is only a fraction of what the students say is needed to remedy the issues they are protesting over.

The full article didn't load for me, but weird how they can do this now. Not sure why they didn't do this before people had to take to the streets. It's like the government will do as little as possible until things finally reach a breaking point and once they found it are willing to give something up. Maybe if they took people's issues seriously in the first place it wouldn't have to get this bad.

I don't think this is gonna change anything. Long school days feel like jail. All the learning to not have a future because AI can do the stuff you learn at school better. Despite all that automation prices rise, retirement age rises wages stagnate. Politicians all over the world are missing to share the benefits of automating with their voters. Companies keep it all. Life should become easier due to this but it will be harder instead.

Concretely the pupils see AI can solve their homework in 5s. Why learn all that rubbish then? It demotivates.

Where is this funding coming from, and why wasn't it available before?

    Something has to give.

The funding is not available, it needs to either be borrowed or taken from somewhere else.

    A fucking loan won't make a difference, they didn't give a penny

And conveniently, this funding will be made available in 2028 after Macron leaves the office.
