Bell Bottoms seem to go in and out of style periodically. Wikipedia thinks there was a revival in the late 90s, and another in fashion circles in the early 2020s.

It is weirdly hard to find a vintage photo of bell bottoms that isn't AI generated. I rejected about 5 in a row which failed an online AI tester. I think the one below is legit.

AI can generate content much faster than humans. If you randomly sample websites, up to a third show signs of AI content being present.

I've seen it claimed that over 50% of new content posted online is AI produced.

I wish it was at least labeled!

There was a whole fake Atari ad which I nearly posted as real, until I found a Snopes page debunking it. A bunch of semi-reputable web sites spoke of it as if it was real.

I try to research the stuff I post, which takes time and effort, and it's still inevitable to mistake some of them, especially when there's a real history along side a fake ad and it all ends up conflated.

  • Incidentally, this is why the waist size of men's pants today is always a few inches smaller than the actual measurement (for example I wear W33 pants but the actual circumference of my waist around my hips is 36"), it's not vanity sizing like is often claimed. The "W" used to be the actual waist, much higher around the abdomen, but they kept that notional size even as the top of mens' pants migrated downward over the decades.

There was a comic back in the '80s who had a routine about how as men get older their pants migrate upwards until eventually their belts are around their chins. But what he was really observing was that men just keep the same fashion sense throughout their entire lives, and the old men of the 1980s had been young men in the 1930s and '40s when waists were much higher.

The 70s, when everybody denied that they had a torso.

Why does this ad from the 70s have a web address on it?

Hi, yes, I'd like my clothing to allow me to effortlessly glide through the air like a flying squirrel in case of some kind of in-flight emergency, what can you do to help me with that?
