Some of the worst people in the country. I was raised evangelical, even the folks I know who were decent on an interpersonal level would never consider voting for anyone other than Republicans.

Other people will rightly focus on the evangelical part, but I want to emphasize how important "whiteness" is to the equation. Black Christians don't do this shit.

The through-line of Trump support is white supremacy. And white evangelical Christianity has a well known problem with white supremacy and white/Christian nationalism.

It's vexing why Christians would admire Trump in the first place because he's just about the opposite of everything they claim to value. But if you think of them as white supremacists first, everything makes perfect sense.

100%. It’s unfortunate that more attention isn’t paid to the “Southern Strategy” - started by Nixon but honed and perfected by Reagan. It was basically a massive counter-revolution where whites hated that black Americans were granted civil rights, marginally improved economic standing, and more broadly there’s at least an attempt to put whites and blacks on an equal footing. This sort of white supremacy was sort of laundered through evangelical Christianity but yes, it’s whiteness first. The “Moral Majority” began as movement to fight the government from removing the tax-exempt status for private Christian schools that practiced racial segregation, for example. While white evangelical Christianity does predate the reaction to the Civil Rights movement, I think it’s fair to say that this white supremacy is the foundation for modern white evangelicalism.
