It's an alleged liberal bastion of human rights that's doing this ๐Ÿ™„

Even the usual liberal bastions within the state didn't overwhelmingly oppose this, and some of the usual population centers were in favor. The less populous areas overwhelmingly were pro-genital exams.

My enby went to sleep knowing that a bunch of Democrats were winning. I'll have to warn them before they leave for school in the morning. This is just disappointing. Trans rights are human rights; how is this hard?

Apparently Colorado and Arizona passed a similar bill. Dems clearly don't care about trans lives

Hopefully the wave of progressive dems that have been bundling through can start to boot out the transphobes.

I think it's wishful thinking, but I hope you're right

I also hope the opportunists who don't really care either way figure out that it's a losing proposition to focus on trans rights as a populist way to gain votes. Then those who actually care about human rights can oppose the Nazis unhindered.

When the overton window is moved, we all (I'm cis) are at risk due to being in out groups. Move it back and the bigots become the figurative old man shouting at clouds.

Not sure why Dems are being called out here? This was a ballot initiative by a Republican, submitted for direct vote. Dems didn't control any part of this.

Given that Washington is an overwhelmingly blue state they sure as fuck voted for it in droves.

Ok, when I see "Dems" I'm thinking politicians or at least party members, not everyone who voted for a candidate with (D) next to their name, so now your comment makes more sense.

WA isn't nearly as "overwhelmingly blue" as a lot of people seem to think, though. It's basically a couple of blue cities in a sea of red, just like a lot of other states. It usually shakes out to mostly blue statewide candidates, but the margin isn't that big.

It doesn't take a lot of otherwise blue bigots or people confused by the deliberately obfuscated language on the ballot to swing that vote, is what I'm saying. I'm still crossing my fingers that it'll end up failing, since more progressive districts are larger and take longer to count, but even if it fails it would be at a margin closer than I'm comfortable with.

I do suspect that if it passes, it would get repealed in the next election as soon as people realize the implications, but we'll see what happens.
