For instance, in Australia, Tim Tams are always a treat, while you either really love or hate Vegemite. In Hong Kong, I can't really think of a divisive food, since almost all of it is 10/10 amazing!

There are a million recipes, all a bit different, and none is right or wrong, everyone will say their family's style is best of course.

So if you ask me, this is the best!

My writing is slightly clearer than the card I have from my gram, plus the measurements on the right column are for two 8 inch pies, where the left is her original recipe for three pies. That's too much pie for just the two of us! 😄

I prefer to bake by weight, since scaling with imperial volumetric measures can get into weird fractions.

Syrup in this recipe is Turkey syrup, but if you want the molasses taste, use molasses for the syrup. Soda is baking soda.

Mix the first 4 batter ingredients into fine crumbs, and reserve about 1/3 to 1/2 cup, then mix in the remainder of the batter ingredients.

Pour filling mixture into your pie shells.

Add batter on top. It will push a lot of filling up top, but as it bakes, the batter will puff and come back to the top and the syrupy part will sink.

Bake 350F for 1 hour

Put the reserved crumbs on top when it comes out the oven.

Hey thanks for the recipe!! I think two pies might still be too much! Appreciated nonetheless

I keep one and take one to dinner at someone's house. You could split that recipe again down to one pie if you have a cooking scale (or estimate some fractions with the volumetric amounts). It keeps me from having leftover syrup that I don't use for anything else.

Other random recipes should still get you something you should enjoy. It's hard to go wrong with all those ingredients, you're going to end up with something good!
