Like an italian hoagie but a round bun, pizza cut into squares rather than traditional slice, meatballs in cube form

I agree to an extent. Some shapes work better for difference sauces because of the way their shape holds onto sauces. Like shapes with lots of ridges are great for "mac and cheese" as opposed to long smooth noodles.
