New Discord clone ("Harmony") with a suspiciously AI-looking website, a single contributor, and blistering development = AI. Took me a minute to find it but it looks like they were scrubbed from a few places ~3 weeks ago.

17 em dashes in comments... yeah that's slop

    You're right to push back — this does appear to be AI generated.

    I've been using an em-dash for ages. Now people think I'm either a bot or use an AI to write for me. This is ridiculous.

    You use em-dashes in code comments? It has its place in regular prose, but a comment is not a novel

    I understand your frustration. It helps me personally to remember that it's not quite GenAI that is the problem—it's the greed that surrounds its implementation/usage. GenAI could have been just a tool, occasionally useful, but our obsession with productivity and the capitalistic goal of replacing workers to get even more profit for the owning class—or in other words just personal greed—is the real problem, not GenAI.

    It's not the em-dashes, it's the feelings we have about them. Concern, trepidation, confusion. We don't need to stop using them, we need to take a breath. generated by the slopinator 5000

    And honestly, you're right to feel that way. Em-dashes are a genuine indicator of AI usage.

    So are words. 🤷‍♀️ Em dashes are only well-represented in LLM output because they’re well-represented in the training data. There’s no simple litmus test, the scummy LLM companies would just tweak their models if there was one.

    I think you could use -o instead of regex? not sure :D

    $ git clone https://github.com/y4my4my4m/harmony && grep -Ro "—" harmony | wc -l

    The regex is to match only em dashes in comments (following a //). If you want to search for all em dashes you can just do that (though there's no need for the -o since grep matches lines and wc -l counts lines).

    no need for the -o since grep matches lines and wc -l counts lines

    grep -o prints each match on a separate line, so the wc -l count will be higher if there are any lines with multiple matches.
