I’m tired of supporting instances that support that trash. Are there any suggestions or even a good up-to-date list available?

In the past Lemmy also had some hard-coded censorship. One could also say "it got deleted for now"

ocr-ing every image post to figure out if it’s from a chan board

Configurable by admin. Choose an instance that does not do this

auto-hiding anything tagged with “meme”

If I understand correctly what you mean, this is also configurable by instance admins. Choose an instance that does not do this

adding a hidden second layer of “trustworthiness” scoring to every user independent of the score of their posts and comments which pushes them up or down the comment chain, and pushing/pulling those trustworthiness scores from a server periodically

From what I've seen, in general in order to get below the threshold that blocks something one really has to work for it. And I haven't noticed the score affecting where comments are placed. Also, one can choose to have comments sorted by time

As for vote quota - choose an instance that set it impossibly high

In exchange on Piefed there are

  • feeds. Private and shared (with federation)
You can gather all communities you want to be in your private "cats" feed and those will be there, regardless if it makes sense or not. It's feed curated by you. Or you can follow someone's public feed and rely on their curation
  • better notifications. You can turn them on for feeds, people, posts, comments...
  • rolling together comments from posts about the same link
  • I'm fuzzy on the details but some time ago I've heard that the personal blocking works better on Piefed. IIRC once you block an instance/account you won't be seeing it
  • following microblogging accounts
  • adding tags to your posts, so those get visible on microblogging fediverse too

I get that some of Rimu's decisions or reactions might have risen some eyebrows. But I moved to Piefed because of it's features and those have been threadiverse-changers for me

if you check the link, by default you start out untrusted.

as for features, i don't really see the point of most of them except blocking and community merging, because the threaded model is pretty much incompatible with linear feeds. mbin does it better and without the baggage.

and yes, of course lemmy has censorship systems. the profanity filter especially is a weird choice. but the codebase is much less opinionated than piefeds. reading it, i get the impression piefed was written in anger.

Well, we can agree to disagree here but I do think this is a good idea ATM. When I see an account posting slop, seo spam or links to stuff that IMO shouldn't exist in the first place, it's always an account "registered today-ish". They might change their MO with time but for now, even with requiring an application message, a new account is often a cat in a bag. Having this slow introduction makes it a bit harder to create harassment accounts in high volume

i'm not saying that it's a bad idea per se, just that with the way the score is calculated you can become trusted in less than a second if you're a bot while humans can take like a week.

Even with positive score you'd still be under new account timer. Personally I feel that this score means much less than many make out of it

it was the fact that it was undisclosed that was the main issue. i imagine most people assume that when there's a public scoring system, posts with high scores are trustworthy (or to put my finger on it, aligned with the prevailing opinion) and posts with low scores are not. finding out that no, actually some users' experience is weighted according to the whim of, in their mind, just some guy, suddenly the whole concept of trust (alignment) on the platform goes out the window.
