From my understanding you are required to use a specific international standard radio channel and be listening for distress callls while on the water.

So if they were on the wrong channel that seems like a fineable offense.

It wasn’t a distress call. It was a call for non-emergency assistance. Like the difference between calling for a tow truck and calling for an ambulance. It wasn’t on the emergency frequency. The story is a nothingburger.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard and the Marine Exchange of Alaska, which monitors ship traffic in Alaska, there was no distress call — just a general request for assistance.

Coast Guard Public Affairs Specialist Shannon Shepard said by email that the Coast Guard heard the call for help just after 9:30 p.m. Monday night.

“At approximately 9:56 p.m., the Coast Guard determined they were not in distress and issued a marine assistance request broadcast on their behalf,” she said.

Article also points out that as a frequent visitor to the area, the cruise ship would be more familiar with the frequencies used locally.

I find VHF to be very fickle. I can often only hear one side of the conversation, if at all. It's probably my radio that sucks to be honest.

Look at you defending a billionaire. If his boat was nearby it should have acted.

Even if it was already getting assistance?

    Yes.

It's not unusual for multiple emergency vehicles to shiw up at a scene on land. Same thing can happen at sea.

Do you think this is a gotcha?

No, I'm just not familiar with maritime etiquette. I don't think you can compare that to vehicles on land. When someone's on the shoulder and you are someone there helping them, there's no expectation for anyone else to also stop and offer assistance.

It does seem strange to me that so many others would be though.

When we went on SAR when my ship was ready duty, we weren't the only ones that responded.

EDIT: Closet boat is expected to render assistance. All boats in area are supposed to respond and offer aid if capable.

Boats of that size would have multiple radios over multiple bands and would be required to monitor the international emergency channel. The second radio is used for normal ship to ship communication and you would have asked for their channel before switching to it.

The emergency channel was not used. The boat simply ran out of fuel, in calm seas, just outside the harbour. It made requests for assistance on normal channels.

They were also directed by the coast guard.

If stating the undisputed facts about the incident i has that side-effect so be it. Distorting things just to get a dig in is a waste of everyone’s time.

Dude. Its expected that when the coast guard tells you to render assistance you do it.

Defending them not acting within the normal behaviour for the maritime community is just bootlicking the owner of the MULTI BILLION DOLLAR YACHT.
