I started using Zed as my daily IDE and I really like the direction they're taking it. I know a lot of developers (especially here on Lemmy) have a dogmatic hatred for AI in code, and I get not wanting to be associated with vibe coding tech bros. But there is also a lot that AI can be really helpful for these days.

One of the reasons I switched away from Sublime Text was seeing my colleagues auto generate tests from a single prompt in their IDE while I was stuck copy+pasting code around. I'm glad Zed has that same lightweight approach while also supporting modern tooling.

@thekerker @zed Just for your awareness: they do use vibecoding in that project. I have a policy to not run AI generated code if I can avoid it, so I block AI agent accounts on GitHub so I get a big banner whenever I look at a repository with commits from one of them.

No. Thanks, Zed Team, but I'll never use your software that trains on me as if on a puppet, eventually making you more smarter and prosperous than me in return, atrophying my skills and desire for fun of development, and sharing you my knowledge and experience. Nor anyone I know does, nor would they support your "supportive" toolset.

The Student plan includes everything in Zed Pro: $10/month in AI token credits, unlimited edit predictions, and real-time collaboration built into the editor.

When your Zed credits run out, you can bring your own API key or add an external agent and keep going.

Wow. I remember when Zed was just trying to be a less bloated VS Code alternative built in Rust... And it somehow turned into this AI-focused editor that's like a 500MB download. How disappointing.

So incredibly predictable. I wrote up an outline for a credit card reconciliation function, with test cases etc. I got ~1000 lines of code including tests cases and 2000 lines of Markdown files.NB this is not production code, I'm using Claude to prototype a real application.@zed
