You know, I probably should temper my expectations of myself after I’ve died 😂

And that’s a fair assessment- I’ll probably rework the current setup into something more mainstream and find someone to co-maintain it as I get older and then fully take it over. Thanks very much for the advice, I’ll get to work on that!

I found this randomly as I try to transition away from square space. I am a neophyte and have no clue about most of the things you wrote. For context, I started to write HTML and CSS way back in the 90s and just never went any further. Fast forward and I have the internet related skills of a troglodyte.

Where would you recommend someone like me start reading or learning about self hosting?

I work in the cloud computing space. The lack of a full featured end-to-end cloud computing provider is really one of the biggest things holding the EU back from IT independence. Its not enough for a provider to provide VM servers or Kubernetes on the compute side, its all the ancillary services such as Advanced Visibility, microservices, advanced routing and load balancing, Enterprise grade HA solutions on both compute and DB side etc.

A number of EU providers have part of this kind of service offering, but to be a replacement for Azure, AWS, GCP, or OCI, there needs to be a complete solution to enable rapid deployment that can grow to a global solution.

Looking into very similar things too. AWS is the most expensive cloud provider I've had to work with, but one thing is for sure, it isn't as bad as Azure in terms of usability and documentation. Anyway, there are cheaper european cloud providers that have many *aaS and per second billing, but they do lag behind the US providers in terms of features and documentation. If you are European and aren't using every feature on US clouds, the price difference can very well be worth it.

    YMMV of course.
