Rich elite libs selling out the First Nations who assisted Settlers with their knowledge to survive Turtle Island.
1st Turtle Islanders*
“America” is the colonist term Europeans genocide with.
Now if we could get 4th Islanders to reparate for our genocide, that would be great.
And thank you for posting them!
I assume that's where Mr. Lightfoot got it as well, but when I read your comment the first thing that came to mind was the lyrics to the song.
She got it from Hiawatha but yeah that's it :)
Thx

Karegnondi could almost be bastardized to Huron(ondi) too, I feel
I've just used IPA with my lunch but it made me wanna take a nap.
Kar-e-njondi
I think Charon-yondee is in Hades, not North America.
Sorry.
Never seen this notation before, what is it?
I prefer abugidas over syllabics anyday.😁
It's a pretty cool style, but my brain isn't good at parsing it.. english still screws me up sometimes lol and I've been working on that most of my life
no worries, I have a lot to learn😂
Ah I misunderstood, that I have no clue about.
I always wondered what that line was and where it came from. Such a great song.
Doubly, seeing as that's not what I am asking😆.
TIL ᐅᒋᐺᐊᓂᔑᓈᐯᒃ script differently: (ᑭᒋᑲᒥ) vs (ᒋᔐᒐᒥ) [Inuit]
I think Gorden got it slightly wrong in the song ( It should be Gami, not Gumee)
According to the wiki,
The Ojibwe name for the lake is gichi-gami (in syllabics: ᑭᒋᑲᒥ, pronounced gitchi-gami or kitchi-gami in different dialects),[14] meaning "great sea". Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote this name as "Gitche Gumee" in the poem The Song of Hiawatha, as did Gordon Lightfoot in his song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"
But since Gorden's song was so popular a lot of folk assumed Gumee was correct.
is it «ᒋᔑ» or «ᒋᔐ» ᒐᒥ?
To this day, there are folks that do NOT use IPA‽
- Giʒi Gami (ᑭᒋ ᑲᒥ)
- Eriel Hɵnan (ᐁᕆᐁᓫ ᐦᐅᓇᓐ)¹
- Miʒi Gami (ᒥᒋ ᑲᒥ)
- Ontarijoʊ (ᐅᓐᑕᕆᔫ)²
- Kar-e-njondi (ᑲᕑᐁᓂᔪᓐᑎ)³

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down Of the big lake, they called Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore, twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early
