I'd start with the Renaissance Era animated films like The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and The Lion King (1994). Beautiful classic 2D animation style, and great music from Ashman and Menkin.

If you enjoy them and want more, you have the option of going back to the Classic Era (e.g. Snow White and Cinderella) or ahead to the Revival Era (e.g. Tangled and Frozen).

Well, I consider "classics" the ones from the '40s and '50s. My grandparents had a bunch of them on VHS and I'd always watch them when I was a kid, and back then I had no idea they were that old (Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp...). They are all beautiful pieces of animation, and Fantasia is quite interesting from a technical standpoint.
But my favorite cartoons are probably the ones from the '90s: Mulan, Tarzan, Hercules... - The Lion King was also a great feat of animation. Two other movies I watched a lot as a kid were Oliver & Company and The Aristocats.
However, as an adult, the only Disney movie I actually like and would rewatch is Cruella (2021)...

If we count Pixar, Wall-E was also cool, and I watched the first Toy Story tons of times.

In the original Hans Christian Anderson tale this guy is such a bag of dicks though, he's already married and basically takes on the mermaid as a concubine even though being on land is literally physically traumatizing for her.

Did you never question why all your stories have you identifying with a main character monarch instead of the serf you statistically would have been? Those stories aren't fun, no beautiful dresses, not much food to eat, no leisure time for fun animal friends.

    Funny how that works.
