Some general voting/system of gov information-

  • Once eligible, voting in State and Federal elections is compulsory. Local government is optional.

  • There is only one level of local government for an area, there isn't a county and then city/town government. There are no overlapping LGAs.

  • We don't do First-past-the-post here, all voting is preferential voting, there is no such thing as a 'wasted vote' here (unless you 'donkey voted' - ie. to turn in a blank or otherwise informal vote, this happens here because as above, voting is compulsory and donkey voting is a form of protest)

  • Unless you happen to be in the electorate the Prime Minister represents as a Member of Parliament (an MP) you don't vote for the Prime Minister here, you only vote for your local member and for 10 senators for your state. (NT and ACT only get 2)

  • Elections are every 3 years, there are no term limits for PMs

  • Who is PM is decided by the party that forms government (well before the election) but as it's the party who decides and the PM is not directly elected to the position, they can be replaced during a government term without fresh elections.

  • The upper house in State government here is called the Legislative Assembly, they have 6 year terms the same as the Federal upper house (The Senate), half of the upper house is elected at each general election.

  • Everything closes at 5PM on Sat/Sun in the Adelaide Metropolitan area due to some old laws. Outside the 'burbs things are open again.

It’s a professor position for literacy at Flinder’s University. I just finished my Master’s of Elementary Education (primary school) here, so my goal is to become a relief teacher to learn how the schools work and get to know the curriculums used before I go for something more permanent.

Thank you for the D&D suggestion! I’ll have to check it out.

OK well, some of my favourite places are (in no particular order):

    • etica.pizza - great Italian and pizza
    • Crafers Hotel - the poshest pub I know of, the menu skews French
    • Pearl - a lovely seafood restaurant in Aldinga, which is is about an hour’s drive south of the city
    • Star of Greece - ditto
    • Hently Farm - a fine dining restaurant out of the city, and great wines
    • The Somerled cellar door: wine bar and cellar door in Hahndorf, about 30 min (?) out of the city. (Their Shiraz is my fav but this is possibly because I know the local newspaper compared it to Penfolds Grange, however I really do love it)
    • Wasai - good sushi in the city
    • Bird In Hand - cellar door and nice restaurant
    • Lucky Lupitas - nice Mexican in North Adelaide
    • Maggie Beer’s restaurant in the Barossa (the Eatery iirc)
    • the Kuti Shack - casual seafood in Goolwa
    • Coriole: nice wines and beautiful gardens, nice cellar door restaurant
    • Penfolds obviously, fine dining restaurant and separate more casual cafe/restaurant?
    • Daughter-in-Law: modern Australian Indian on Rundle St

I’m sure I’m forgetting a bunch too, there are so many good places 🙏

Thank you! I have no doubt we’re going to love it. I do love wine as well. My wife was telling me there’s a place nearby that she found that makes some decent Riesling that I think we will want to check out. I personally enjoy reds and whites myself though.

As for food, what do you recommend? We are all pretty adventurous, including my 12 year old kid.

Congratulations, hello and welcome. Adelaide is a lovely little city, I hope you enjoy your time here.

I’m not much of a D&D person here but I have seen a few shops around the place so you shouldn’t have too much trouble in that area.

You’re in luck if you’re into food and/or wine because it’s literally surrounded by wine regions.

Lost Dice or Good Games in the CBD would be a couple of decent choices for finding DND and general TT gaming groups, I reckon!

The 'URL' and the 'Image' field are mutually exclusive. You can only have one or the other. The post title just links to the 'Image' if it is set.

What you want to do - if you want both a link and a pic - is to use the 'Thumbnail URL' field to set the image (and put the link in the 'URL' field, of course).

You should be able to edit this post and do that.

Previous comment of mine on the matter, with a link to an example post: https://aussie.zone/post/30686818/21971458
