As any cat will tell you, there’s something inherently magical about an object dangling on a string. This is the operating principle of the bat puppet. If a film is dragging, a bat puppet is a sure way to perk things up, in a strong film, a bat puppet will add to the fun. It’s hard to go wrong with a bat on a string.

i do enjoy seeing a bat puppet so this was fun little niche listicle to find, with a couple movies i hadn't seen, and also a few of the movies are up for free in full on youtube (they all look to be available on archive.org as well if you prefer, i checked for each) 🦇

a nice stand-alone short set in the world of Ersatz, if you're not already familiar these are well worth checking out if you are into darker, horror-oriented animation, and there's really cool worldbuilding in them

The 2000s were a strange decade to love horror. The remake machine ran nonstop, J-horror imports arrived by the crate, Saw and Hostel kicked off years of arguing about torture porn, and found footage crept in underneath all of it. It was also the last decade when discovery was physical. You walked down a shelf, picked something up because the box looked cool, and took your chances.

With that much product moving, good stuff got flattened. Some movies caught reviews they did not earn. Some got dumped by studios that had stopped caring. Some opened next to something bigger and vanished.

None of these are secret masterpieces. A few are genuinely great, several are a mess, and every one of them deserves to be judged on its own terms instead of against whatever trend it happened to land in. You will disagree with at least three. Good.

Arrow in the Head has revealed the trailer and artwork for Beyond the Horizon of Madness: The Horrors of Sam Neill, a new documentary from Mike Gencarelli centered on John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness and Paul W.S. Anderson’s Event Horizon.

Neill, who died July 13 at the age of 78, left behind an incredible genre legacy that stretched from playing the adult Damien Thorn in Omen III: The Final Conflict and starring opposite Isabelle Adjani in Possession to Dead Calm, In the Mouth of Madness and the sci-fi horror cult classic Event Horizon. And, of course, there’s a little movie called Jurassic Park, which remains one of the most breathlessly exhilarating theatrical experiences of my lifetime.

For thirteen years the V/H/S franchise has been rooting through the world’s cursed camcorders looking for the scariest thing on tape. It turns out the scariest thing was a filing cabinet the whole time.

The next installment is V/H/S: SCP, and it drops the found footage anthology into the SCP Foundation, the giant online horror project that has spent years pretending to be a leaked government archive. This is the rare crossover where you read the headline and immediately think, well, obviously. Two things built out of the same broken parts finally noticing each other.

Per Variety, V/H/S: SCP is coming from indie genre label Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Studios. It is the first feature length trip into SCP territory, and it is aiming for theaters in 2027.

Producing are Roy Lee and Steven Schneider out of Spooky Pictures, alongside Josh Goldbloom and Michael Schreiber. Goldbloom and Schreiber are not tourists here. Their fingerprints are already on recent entries like V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/Beyond, so the people assembling this actually know how the machine runs. (...)

Want to see the future of film? Look to the horror genre. While some corners of Hollywood feel stuck in the past, with the same old directors making the same sorts of movies year after year, scary movies are experiencing a genuinely thrilling moment. Young filmmakers worldwide are turning in bold and inventive work, and – even with small budgets and little marketing – audiences are turning out in droves.

In the first half of 2026, it seems that the cultural shift may be complete. At the weekend, Backrooms, directed by 20-year-old YouTuber Kane Parsons, grossed a staggering $118 million at the global box office, while Obsession, directed by 26-year-old YouTuber Curry Barker, hit $148 million worldwide on a budget of under $1 million. Both films are outpacing big-budget releases from major studios, showing a clear sea change in audience taste.

Buffet Infinity is the kind of movie that restores your faith in truly independent filmmaking. With so much derivative chaff bombarding us at cineplexes and on streaming services, seeing something THIS unique, fresh and experimental is an absolute delight. It’s weird, it’s funny and yes, it’s even legitimately creepy at times. I can’t help but feel like we’ll be looking back on this one as a decade-defining genre movie — even if it might take a good 20 or 30 years before everybody else figures it out.

There’s an obvious gimmick to the film. About 90 percent of Buffet Infinity is comprised of fake commercials — usually running about 30 seconds to two minutes — stitched together and overlapping in carefully selected segments. Yes, it might give you some WNUF Halloween Special vibes at first, but it doesn’t take long before Buffet Infinity becomes its own animal.

Buffet Infinity is written and directed by Simon Glassman. It stars Kevin Singh, Claire Theobald, and Donovan Workun.

Hungry – but don’t know what to eat? Need a used car? A lawyer? How about insurance? Or a sandwich?

Echoing the Canadian comedy classic “SCTV” and picking from hundreds of hours of original, low-budget TV ads to tell the sinister tale of two restaurants battling it out in the fictional town of Westridge County. Ads for insurance, used car rivals, a local religious scholar, and a recording artist converge to tell the story of an expanding sinkhole, a cult, and an ever-growing restaurant that becomes unsettlingly sentient.
