This company makes some of the worst decisions and is so badly managed. If it wasn't for their crazy luck with Facebook.com they would've been gone long ago.

Dale Johnston opens the gate to his neat suburban garden on the western fringes of Newport in South Wales. There’s a trampoline and a slide on the lawn for his grandchildren, and chairs for him and his wife. He should be enjoying the light draining from the perfect autumnal sky – but almost his entire view is blotted out by a vast expanse of prefabricated panels.
The 23 metre-high grey hulk looming over him and his neighbours is a hyperscale datacentre. It is heralded by the area’s Labour politicians as a job creator, yet all Johnston can think about is what he has lost: “Before, the sun used to come around here and it was lovely.” The way residents have been treated is “disgusting”.
Johnston, who used to work for a chemical company in the city, worries what their lives will be like when the centre is switched on: the 36 sets of air blast coolers, needed to stop the chips inside overheating, most likely generate a constant drone, while regular testing of 60 back-up diesel generators, to prevent costly interruption to the flow of data, could produce harmful fumes. He already has to keep his bathroom window closed to stop the low hum from another facility on the rapidly expanding 46-acre datacentre campus that borders the small enclave of 27 houses.
We are in for a ride when this bubble pops.
this person is really confused about what they are talking about. mostly because the writer doesnt know what AI means.
the over inflated hype is around frontier model companies and data centers. its not our future. this aritvle is so unfocused its hard to target one issue, llms. llms will move to the home. its what any advance user wants and jensen k ows its true, hebce his push to consumer chips.
(even if you dont want ai, i am sure you are tired of the corporate nonsense and happy to have people deal with it at home)
10 years later "shit we just recreated humans"
Does this mean the brain actually works similarly to NNs? And that modeling it is possible?
Is that the part where we have to "Accept ‘bad things’ in return for benefits of AI, says Sam Altman" (source: https://piefed.social/c/news@lemmy.world/p/2454834/accept-bad-things-in-return-for-benefits-of-ai-says-sam-altman)
Goodness, I think I'd rather live in blissful ignorance while I can then
I think we've been way too fast and loose with medical science in the past like 50 years though, that there's much better regulation than just piracy.
Like the fact they we don't commonly have people 'branded' with cooperate chemical fuck ups is honestly a sign of the times
I highly recommend the podcast episode by Rob Reid and Sam Harris about synthetic biology. Especially if you like existential anxiety.
Anthropic quietly set up a biology lab, which would track with this.
Currently just for pharmaceuticals. But mark my words — synthetic biology is going to be one of the next Torment Matrix endeavours of Silicon Valley. And it'll have so much more fuck up potential than AI.
"Me making Money > Children's Lives"
Why are we accepting the AI excuse as true? It’s more likely the humans involved deliberately targeted civilians. Hegseth, Trump, Miller…these are people who have already targeted civilians and children. Trump brutalized and raped children. Does anyone believe he gives a shit about a school filled with little girls and teachers?
It literally says what it is in the first sentence and provides a practical example right next to it.
Ask typed questions about any text or JSON and get calibrated answers in milliseconds.
There is also the hospital in Afghanistan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunduz_hospital_airstrike
We will definitely be less judgmental if you want to play Mario with Luigi
So if Iran struck the school his child went to and said "eh, it was chosen by AI", that'd be OK?
Yet another AI thing (product/service/general concept) that completely fails to tell me what it is.
Nobody ever talks about the schools we DIDN'T bomb! We never get credit for that! It isn't FAIR!
So this guy is now on The List. His buddy Thiel has been on it for a long time.
Ok, so it wasnt just an "oupsie^TM^", it was a "palantir oupsie^TM^", the war crime facilitator software.
We should “accidentally” have a palantir headquarters airstrike happen
He’s right. We should also put September 11, 2001 in the same context, right?
Right?
Motherfucker.
After spying on communications between scientists? Sure.
Despite Anthropic’s comparisons to Crispr, it remains unclear whether the discovery will have any practical applications, let alone be as transformative as the gene-editing technology.
They don't even know what they discovered 😑
It was absolutely specifically prompted. Likely not for them specifically, but to beg for money from identifiable people with publicly accessible info and emails. LLMs don't have desires or wants. They don't know what they ask. The LLM has no concept of begging nor any 'concepts' at all, what so ever.
