The lawsuit said, “AI companies pay Brave to provide them with real-time online content from the Brave search index,” and use content from the Brave index “to train their own AI models” and “to respond to specific user queries.” The NYT lawsuit points to Brave’s website, which says the Brave Search API is “used by some of the biggest names in AI, including Cohere, Mistral, Perplexity, and You.com.”

The browser “blocks advertising that would otherwise appear on The Times’s website, and instead shows its own ads, offering its users a cut of the revenue even as it deprives The Times of digital advertising revenue that helps it fund the expensive effort of producing journalism,” the lawsuit said.

If this is true, this is so scummy. I'm all for paywall blocking for people, but taking away profits from news sites and turning it into profits for your company is a new low.

This Reddit post is so funny bc before this, I was about 80% more concerned about the techbro "move fast break things" mentality than the workplace culture. Security is why I've been a paying Proton user for 11 years, after all.

But after reading the post and OP's comments, my concern for the workplace culture pretty much just shot up. This comment is crazy. Apparently they later edited it and changed "cowards" to "leakers" but still.

Not to mention the post has over 5000 upvotes, but every comment the OP made in it were heavily downvoted. Hmm, I wonder why! 🤔

It was 100% a PR move but it just made me more sure to cancel my Proton subscription lmao! Good job, I guess?

The entire article just makes me sad, but especially this part (emphasis mine):

One man emailed me with an “investigative story tip” about “AI business-workflow continuity and OpenAI customer support,” which was about how his ChatGPT assistant called “Captain NORBERTA” was sometimes unreliable, which resulted in “lost productivity” because he had to double check it, along with some other minor technical problems.

Can confirm, this happened to me a few years ago. Thankfully I realized it minutes after it renewed itself and managed to get a refund, but the customer service was adamant that I did not turn off auto-renew. I did. I specifically double-checked a week before my plan was supposed to expire--I always have subscription expiration dates on my calendar bc of shit like this. Deleted my account as soon as I got my money back. Fuck NordVPN.

This is so stupid I love that it has a Wikipedia segment about it.

2014 thread refuting user's murder and manslaughter accusations

    Excuse me. What.

This. I've seen a lot of obnoxious and/or argumentative comments from them, but one that stuck with me was when my first Lemmy instance had to close when Trump was inaugurated due to safety fears.

The first comment to the announcement post was a hexbear user saying something like "Yeah this is why capitalism doesn't work, America sucks and it needs to go down" -- which I do not disagree with, but the post was the admin sharing genuine fears and talking about the logistics of having to move to another state. The user didn't even say a "I'm sorry you have to close your instance because of this...", just straight up getting into politics when it wasn't the main point of the post.

(I will always miss you, possumpat.io; I hope the admin is safe and thriving!)

'We rely on Hispanic labour,' he told The New York Times this past Sunday. 'Nobody thought something like this could happen here.' Wilder felt far enough off the beaten path that residents assumed the aggressive immigration crackdowns they'd been hearing about were a big-city problem.

    They actually said it. Incredible.

Holy shit, the mods made a poll of whether members want the chatbot to be in its own channel or everywhere in the server, they voted "please just keep it in its own channel", and this guy said, and I quote: "the mob doesn’t get to rule." Wow.

Also, as usual with these guys, there isn't a "no integration" option, just "limited" or "free roam"... Not that it matters bc he'd disregard the results of the poll anyway lmao.
