This isn’t talking about price gouging. Or at least, not that second part of the title. The full quote is:

“when customers engage with Sparky, their average order value jumps 40%.”

This is talking about ignorant customers getting talked into adding more to their order than they originally planned, by an AI that is designed to encourage people to buy as much as possible. Walmart isn’t changing the price of products that are ordered through the AI tool.

Still shitty behavior but it’s just another marketing tool and marketing has been finding ways to influence customers to buy more things since the dawn of time.

A far more concerning quote from the article for me would be:

Walmart has filed a patent for technology that can unmask anonymous cell phone data after a single store visit, then track where shoppers live, how they commute to work, and what restaurants they frequent

On my phone I can usually just press-and-hold the notification or conversation and see the full message in the preview while holding. Then I can just release when I’m done and the conversation stays unread because I never actually opened it.

Yeah I can think of plenty of crossings just within 100 miles of me that I’d hate to have to cross on foot to take my kid to school every day but if I had to do it, it would be worth it for their development, self esteem, and best shot at success - as long as I could do it safely. Good dad.

I mean, it’s possible he’s gripping a pipe/snorkel of some kind in his hand protruding through the top of the bag itself.

He’d just have to grip it tight and hold it above water as he wades through. Perhaps it’s just deep enough that there’s not a reasonable way for him to hold the kid completely out of the water, but it’s easy enough for him to hold him up just enough that water doesn’t come in over the top of the bag itself.

With the amount of air in the bag to be “full” and relatively pressurized, he’d reliably have several minutes before any issues. It’s not like it’s suctioned around the kid’s face. There’s several minutes of air in there. More than enough time to ford a river with width measured in yards.

He only has the power to do that for the executive branch. He can’t compel citizens or corporations to follow along - not with the law anyway. He is getting away with it because the people whose pockets he’s lining are happy to play along as long as number goes up. That’s all they care about.

General and social anxiety are correlated with some types of autism. Doesn’t mean everyone on the spectrum has anxiety nor that everyone who experiences these types of anxiety is on the spectrum. But it is a data point. String enough of them together and you just might stumble your way into a diagnosis. Or that’s how I did anyway.
