Whoa, that is incredible. So you felt calm as it all unfolded? Did it feel surreal?
I can't explain this phenomenon, maybe someone else can, but I think we have expectations of how it "should" be or how we "should" feel when something terrifying happens.
In my experience which mirrors what some of the people describe in the article is that you feel quite normal. Everything is normal when a guy walks through a train brandishing a knife.
I think we expect to hear screaming and running, the cues for panic, but it often doesn't start like that.
I assume most of what I'm describing comes down to the bystander effect - a very real and powerful effect
Oh yeah I forgot about this guy. I've been meaning to read his book. Feels like a good time to buy it
Just to add: there was an embargo on releasing the patch and information about the patch, but some website or something broke the embargo.
That meant that malicious people could read what the patch was doing and understand how to exploit the issue/bug.
Edit: all the details are here: https://thephp.foundation/blog/2026/10/21/todays-php-security-release-and-how-were-strengthening-php-security/
And then you plug in your Everdrive and a new world opens up!
- Good pun!
- That is a good point about them not leaving. Although I suppose any bank could choose to stop operating in the UK if they really didn't want to pay the extra percentage. Seems unlikely though
Presumably because of the amount of profit they are making.
Apparently HSBC made £14 billion profit in 2026: https://www.independent.co.uk/bulletin/news/hsbc-profit-shares-bank-tax-b3027061.html
My quick maths suggests they'll pay an extra £700 million in tax. So they would still clear over £13 billion in profit!
Seems like an overly harsh comment. Sounds like a genuine accident.
If he is found guilty it will be interesting to see if Katherine Ryan comes forward and names him.
She has previously talked about someone high profile being a sexual predator but won't disclose who, presumably for legal reasons.
Komorebi... learnt something new today - thanks!
Exactly what I was thinking. It makes me think of the book Four Thousand Weeks, and Chasing Daylight.
The former is about the trap of productivity and thinking you can fit more into your day than you can. Hint: no matter how much you get done in your day, you will want to try to fit in more
And the latter I don't want to spoil but there was a quote along the lines of "Gene looked at all his colleagues who wanted more and thought, do they know when they will have enough?", again the idea that we will always want more.
Reading to your child and spending time with them is enough. Forget all the other distractions the world offers you.

I've read the article and I don't really understand your comment. Could you elaborate?
