That's one of the biggest issues I see, having to go to reddit to find tech help or general info/advice.

People kinda go and bunch up together, then magnetize and start drawing in more and more people to the black hole, takes energy not go fall into the big socials. Most people are to lazy to care about alternatives

adjusts glasses mhh ackshually... Well like if you mean the start of puberty (8-13) yes fuck that, but its not pedophilia after a certain age by definition. If you feel calling it pedophilia cause it has extra shock value sure, you can try and do that, but it's just untrue.

While I agree the younger you go the more icky it gets, 18 as the cutoff is completely arbitrary and a 16y/o could be way more mature than an 18y/o in a ton of cases, of course there are special protections even for 16/17 (some considering bigger age gaps worse even if everything else is proper and legal)

I don't feel I was any differently prepared to engage in sex at 16 compared to 18, if we are gonna argue that we should drive age of consent to 21y/o maybe instead. Or higher.

So "mature enough" could be untrue even for something that's 23 years old or older, while no longer pedo after the defined pedophilia cutoff age is just a fact.

It's alright here (I'm also super new here) tho there's way less content going around here than on reddit, gotta get to work posting and commenting here to make it more active (personally) I feel you have a bigger stake on keeping a community active when it's smaller like this

ephebophilia From what I just googled ephebophilia starts at 15, 11-14 is hebephilia, I think a lower age of consent in some cases can be argued (I think it's already a thing that in special cases it is already allowed, for example, a 16-17 y/o with someone who is 18-20) with special protections in place, like keeping a close look at the relationship and power dynamics.

Talking about this as a non-professional pedo (sarcasm), as I once dated 16 while I was 19, yea, a bit icky, but legal. I think the law as it is already contemplates underaged relationships enough, I think it even contemplates 16-17 with older adults even, again with a ton of restrictions (you can get charged super fast if the relationship has abuses that might pass as normal fights in a same age relationship, stuff like that)

I think its perfect as it is really. Safe enough for most and even giving a bit for the most depraved, impatient people of society that don't wanna necessarily wait

I think you should flat out not accept anything 15 and lower, you're cutting too close to the person not being mature enough, a 16 y/o is pretty close to 18 when it comes to maturity, but go to 15,14,13, and that's not a thing anymore, 12 and less is insane to even think about.

People in Lemmy are still people, I don't think you got banned off of reddit for "'absolutely no reason" my guess is that you said something (doesn't matter if the take/comment you put on reddit was or wasn't good/proper) that pissed someone off and they banned you.

I wouldn't venture to think Lemmy is thaaaaaat different from reddit in the sense that every single user will be reasonable, level headed and open to civil discussion on here. From what I read from other users, it is still possible to get banned "for no reason" on Lemmy too.

Straw man now lol, I point out you engaged in an ad hominem fallacy and you call me a victim cause that's way easier for you than to adress that I called you out on using flawed logic, that't not a response to the point I made, again, the age of my account is not a factor in what I choose to say about a topic, it's like saying you can't have an opinion on abortion because you are not a woman, or an opinion on public universities because you went to a private one.

Or are you gonna argue that it's somehow "wrong" to not want a really cool new thing you found to prosper in the best way possible? I'm not the boss of anyone, not buiding up any cults or gathering followers of any kind to follow my orders, I'm just a guy, sharing his thoughts on something, and asking more experienced people on their thoughts... If you think that's a bad thing...

It's nice of you to try and get an ego boost out of me (shouldn't even need to tell you, but, Ad Hominem? really? The age of my account doesn't have anything to do with what I say)

But go ahead, point out where in my post I said anything about telling other people what to do? My post was made out of curiosity of what other people thought about this, framed as a question, and showcasing some of my preliminary thoughts about both options, if you can find a place in my post where I tell others how they should run Lemmy I'll apologize, I don't have any issues with apologizing, hell, I'll take down the post even.

If not, stfu, you're just being an ass for literally no reason, if you can't point it out, then you are just talking shit, and it seems that in your looong history of this account (9months on Lemmy) you didn't even learn how to construct a proper argument.

Well, Gmail really wants me to use my phone it seems. Every single time that I try to log into Gmail with one of my specific accounts, it (doesn't happen for everything) no matter how carefully I type the password and no matter if I check the little box to see the password before I send it The password will be always wrong. The second time it won't be wrong, it will be right. But after typing it for the second time, it will ask me to go fetch my phone and check the security feature there. Has this happened to anybody else?

I know the word normies may have weird connotations, but I just mean that, regular everyday people.

I've been enjoying Lemmy a lot and even recommended it to a few close friends who are working in tech. But I would like Lemmy to be way bigger, maybe have those makefriends communities like reddit has, be it gaming friends, just for chatting, for voicecalls, etc etc...

But I also wonder, could growing Lemmy indiscriminately be a bad thing? As you relax filters and barriers to entry, yes, more people can come in, but I have a feeling the quality of the people might go down aswell.

Is a clique-like platform what Lemmy is supposed to be like? Or is it supposed to try and absorb as much users as possible and be just a user-managed user-owned reddit alternative with no ads and less censorship?

I believe the answer may lie somewhere in the middle, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, as I'm a total newbie on here.

(Also I understand private dms on Lemmy are not secure, but you can keep the idea of the "r4r" community and just drop a matrix or session link in dms, not perfect as the admins can be what username you sent out, but at least it ends there)

Heyy, how's it going? After finding Lemmy and pushing myself to try it out I'm loving it, so if this is the reddit alternative, what about that discord alternative everyone's talking about? Matrix. Tried downloading Element and got some kind of error message at the beginning, it's probably fixable, but I could also not bother and get a different client. Anyone that uses Matrix has clients they'd recommend?

Well, a random creep messaged me on reddit, after a few messages exchanged he said he looked up my private profile on google and read through my posts. Outside of how angry I was at him for doing that, it surprised me that google does this, It even gave an AI OVERVIEW of who I am on reddit, (I have posted my age and country on reddit, and a few other things ofc, but the others describe what im into and what I do on reddit, not tied to any personal info, so its just my age and country really) But what the fuck google? I know you can look up people in places like ghostddit, so I wasn't expecting my profile to be 100% private either, but it's crazy you can find it straight on google. I guess its slowly coming to a point than ANYTHING you do online is gonna visible for EVERYONE. Yes we were already being surveilled, but this and then the discord thing with messages from servers showing up on google too? I'm pissed off man. (I know lemmy is not private either, but I don't have a google account tied to here, the one email I used to register didn't ask me for phone verification so its not as bad to hang out here, might look into matrix later)

Hi, how's it going? I've been daily driving mint with i3 for a while now, (takes like 500mb idle ram) but I always hear mint being called a newbie distro, I know arch is harder to set up and more customizable for example, but overall im wondering, in which cases one would go from mint to another distro? what can make other distros "better" than mint? i'll end up using a window manager (i3 or if thats not availible some other lightweight one) so differences in desktop environments i dont really care that much about

Hi, how's it going? I was looking up mechanical keyboards and people saying they feel so much better to use (my membrane doesn't feel to bad at all so it really intrigues me how something could be better, I've never tried mechanical keyboards before)

And alongside that, I wonder if a mechanical keyboard can be as quiet/quieter than a regular membrane keyboard, I don't wanna bother the humans around me with loud af clicky noises.

Heyy, I'm learning programming and trying to choose a focus, I saw you can make web/backend w node, desktop (bloatware but discord uses it so if it works it works), games (not AAA and not optimized for performance but it shouldn't matter for indie too much) Is there anything that compares? I wanna focus on one thing instead of spreading myself over a ton of languages, I do feel js is interesting for this, but I'm just starting out, so looking to hear some thoughts of people more familiar with programming.
