Phelpssan mentioned that game doesn’t require precise platforming, and is more about finding the path to clear the level. To which I would like to say, Objection!

In my defense, I'm coming from MIO which requires a LOT more precision 😀. Celeste felt very forgiving compared to it.

Playing Library of Ruina!

This is a deckbuilding game that gets a lot of praise for its excellent gameplay, OST, visuals and VN-style storyline... but is also known for being extremely long (100h+), complex and challenging - "the difficulty curve is vertical" is a famous joke about it.

Early impressions are good. The story got me hooked immediately, the gameplay is enjoyable, though the learning curve was higher than I expected and had me taking breaks to search the web for guides during the early hours. The UI on the Switch is clunky, but I got used to it after a while. Some text is really small and might be annoying to read in handheld mode (in particular in the OG Switch with the smaller screen), but since I'm playing on a big TV it isn't bothering me much.

Given the size of the game and the fact that it makes for good shorter sessions where you do 1-2 encounters I'll probably be playing it as a side-game for a while.

Playing Final Fantasy Resonance!

Amazon kept delaying my order, ended up cancelling and getting from another store. Started over from the beginning instead of importing my Demo save, and loving it. Still very early since I only got it yesterday night, but this should be my main game for the next few weeks.

Wow, how long did it take you to finish Celeste?

~6h or so for the base game. Not sure if I'll try the post-game, but I unlocked most of the B-Sides during this playthrough.

Maybe it’s worth giving the game another try.

I think Celeste is more about figuring out the path through a specific room than extremely precise platforming, so if you're stuck maybe check a video for that section?

And if you're still stuck after that you can always enable the assist to get past that spot.

My experience with MIO got me thinking if I could still enjoy harder platforming games, so I ended up doing a replay of Celeste to test this.

And yeah - that game still rocks. 1500+ deaths to finish the main story and at no point I got frustrated like I did with MIO. There's a very important line between "hard" and "punishing" and Celeste is really well designed to never cross into the latter.

Finished Super Robot Wars Y Anniversary Expansion Pack!

This was an odd expansion. It's a really good "alternate" final chapter for the game, adding a ton of things people were asking for in the base game - letting certain characters survive, a bunch of new combination attacks, Witch from Mercury S2 content, better closure for several story points.

But at the same time, the lack of proper integration with the base game really hurts it. How many people will enjoy going through the (very long) final chapter of the game, then jump into this DLC to go through variations of the same scenarios? I think that a mod that allows you you go straight from Chapter 6 into Anniversary Expansion Pack would be amazing and make for the best possible experience for someone playing this game for the first time.

Overall I really enjoyed SRWY. The base game is solid and fixes most of the issues I had with the previous game, the main cast is fantastic and there's a ton of great cross-series interactions. I think the DLCs are good, but a bit too pricy for what they offer so I don't recommend them unless you get them on a sale.

Haven't decided what I'll play next.... probably resuming Perennial Dusk: Kinsenka.

Are there assists that can make game easier?

Yes, there are assists and you can turn them on anytime:

    • Eroded Bosses: Bosses get weaker if you keep losing to them.
    • Ground Healing: You have one health point that automatically regenerates if you stay still on the ground for a few seconds.
    • Pacifist: Enemies won't attack you unless you strike them first.

And is it worth it with those assists? For someone in “Silksong is super hard, I am never even going to try it” crowd.

Tough question. It's certainly easier than Silksong, but I think you'd still find this game too hard even with assists on.

    • From what I read the boss assist caps at ~1/2 the required hits to defeat them, which is still a lot.
    • Ground Healing lets you keep retrying the plataforming sections freely, without worrying about dying and going back to a savepoint, but they'll still be hard. Like, this is a fairly early-game (optional) section, and it gets much, much worse.
    • Pacifist will be handy if you screw up and die, and need to go through a crowded area again, but not much useful for anything else.

    Finished MIO: Memories in Orbit!

While the game did get less frustrating later on I was very burned out at that point, so I just got the "Normal" ending and won't be trying to get the "True" ending.

Maybe turning on assists from the beginning would've avoided that, but overall I think this game is just poorly designed. It relies way too much on trial-and-error for both platforming and boss battles, while being extremely punishing thanks to low health, no healing, lack of a reasonable checkpoint system (leading to constant runbacks), and just plain lack of polish with inconsistent hitboxes (so many frustrating moments with the red plants that act as "spikes" in platforming sections) and some control issues with the grapple mechanic.

Also has a very... contentious mechanic to say the least. I've put it in spoiler tags but you should consider reading it if you're interested in the game.

    Mechanics Spoiler

There are story-related moments where you permanently lose health. There's a plot reason for that, and enemies also lose a chunk of their life, but it felt like a slap in the face considering how you are constantly struggling with the low amount of total health.

Overall I'd say this is only recommended for the "Silksong is easy" crowd. And I think even them will get frustrated in some parts of the game.

I will however leave praise for the "Normal" ending final boss, that battle was excellent - reminded me of some of my favorite bosses in harder games like Hollow Knight or Nine Sols.

    Playing Picross S+!

Finished the e1 puzzles. Got the e2 pack and will keep playing from time to time.

Probably resuming Super Robot Wars Y Anniversary Expansion Pack for now, don't want to start a big game with Final Fantasy Resonance releasing soon.

I don't mind the higher difficulties, it's the time wasting that drives me mad.

Really hard bosses? Sure, just let me respawn immediately next to it instead of making me go through a minute of walking before every retry.

Tough platforming challenges? Do it like Well Dweller and have a health item respawn at the beginning of the challenge so you can keep practicing as much as necessary.

    Finished Afterimage!

I had good time with it, but it's a massively flawed game.

The Good: Colossal maps, with a lots and lots to stuff to find - if you're in the mood to chill and explore a huge world (while probably getting lost) you're going to love it. Combat is solid with a lof of diferent weapons. Map is very open with plenty of different paths.

The Bad: Story is borderline incomprehensible, likely due to a bad translation. There's some really cryptic stuff and you'll almost certainly need a guide if you're going for the true ending. Map and fast travel are serviceable, but not as good as they needed to be for the size of the game. Switch 1 performance is "playable" at best.

    Playing MIO: Memories in Orbit!

This is a challenging game. You die easily, and healing is limited to a few specific locations in the map. Maps are full of "gotcha" moments with enemies dropping out of nowhere and not-very-obvious "touch this and you lose life damage" spots. Dying sends you back to one of the (very few) save points, even for bosses.

The end result is that you keep replaying the same location a lot, which is making this game really frustrating to play.

Which is a shame, because the rest of the game is really good. Cool powerups, decent combat, interesting customization options, great atmosphere.

That sounds correct, left votes are very centered around Lula.

Which is also another major problem for the left in the future - he's 80 and there's absolutely no good successor to inherit those votes (partially his own fault too, he and his party never liked to share).

Looks like it's hovering around 80-82. I read a couple of them and the TL;DR seems to be "yeah, it's not as good as the previous games but still worth playing".

DF review has very high praise for the technical aspects, though so far they only tested in on the Switch 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhVJ_P6dzFg
