Not OP, but if you are asking if I miss the day that everyone I interacted with either believed or pretended to believe that Hitler was a horrific thing and a blight on humanity, then yes, yes I miss that. The fact that having an alternative opinion on Hitler is now socially acceptable is fucking horrible.

For real, I don't get why more people don't talk about this. They literally dismantled their own plan to appease Republicans, the Republicand never supported it, and they pushed forward their gutted plan.

Like, if you are going to say fuck it and push the plan with Democrats alone at least use the original plan that wasn't gutted. That shit was purposeful.

FYI, most non-US citizens of Lemmy wants US citizens to fight and die to secure the marginally better rights they have but didn't have to fight for because it was won by their ancestors who were weighting them against must grimer fates. They know they wouldn't risk death in the same situation. However, they think we are stupid enough to get bullied into it by them.

They will also do exactly nothing to help and will provide no useful suggestions. If it is any consolation, the US is large and influencial enough that we will all go down together.

I'm not defending it, but I can explain it, since it was the same strategy used in drug development in the early to mid 2000's.

Essentially, you have labor costs on your financial reports.

    • If you have a blockbuster product, layoffs improve your financials even more.
    • Poor product? Layoffs make your financials not look terrible.
    • Work productivity goes up too much (unit of work measured / hours of labor)? Well, that means you can do layoffs because you don't need productivity that high. Plus, at least initially it will look even better since you lowered the denominator.
    • Terrible productivity? Layoffs make it look better quickly.

Why the fuck would anyone do this? Because individuals are held accountable to quarterly financials instead of long term success. You can only "hold off the wolves" so long before the leader either gets forced to do layouts, quits, or is fires. Companies that are privately owned don't have the same pressure though. Of interest, employee owned companies are also much better, but often take on a terrible work life balance culture due to massive peer pressure without oversight. So even though the "easy" solution is to have employee owned work environments with no management, even that can lead to toxicity.

I would love to agree, but I think this falls into hindsight being 20/20.

For myself, I eat meat. However, I can easily imagine a world where that would be considered ethically horrible. I believe it was punishable by death in Japan for like 1000 years in the past. However, I was raised to eat meat, and honestly don't see a problem with it. I'm sure I would feel different if raised differently.

When we say "I would hold my same morals regardless," I think we may be giving ourselves too much credit... Or not giving enough credit to those who lived in the past.

As you said, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was officially established in March 2003. The agency was created following the passage of the Homeland Security Act of 2002. It was created from merging prior organizations such as US customs.

If you don't understand how difficult it would be for a president to undo such a sweeping change to government structure with limited congressional support, then you don't understand how the US government works, and this conversation is futile. The literal reason Trump us using ICE is because he can't make a new organization, so is utilizing one that already existed.

I didn't like Obama's presidency, so I don't know what bringing him up means to you, but the new issue don't under trump was the purposeful separation of children from their parents, and separate deportations to keep them separate as a means of punishment.

Honestly, what even is your point? That people were ok with it previously? Many weren't. That is hasn't gotten dramatically worse under Trump/Republicans? If so, fuck right on off.

Nearly every nation has immigration control in some way, often with a dedicated service. The current administration has modified and abused an agency that already existed to give their "SS" false legitimacy.
