The followup article is interesting https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/09/rayhunter-what-we-have-found-so-far
post
Looking at the date of the article, apparently this was released in March of 2025, but I had not heard of it, so it's good to once in a while see older articles like this resurface again.
To @irotsoma@lemmy.world's point, could a phone app be made to :
- Record tower eNBID, signal strength, and GPS coordinates on a regular basis
- If, near a given GPS coordinate, eNBID is now different, or the same with significantly changed strength, alert the user
Theoretically this would allow a device to notify on a new "tower"/etc. Oddly enough I'm going to be around a bunch of telecom people in the coming weeks, so I might ask about this.
Still pretty limited set of supported devices, but it's not really mean to be a defensive tool. Would be nice if this results in a way to detect and prevent your device from connecting to them, someday.
We have tried to make Rayhunter as easy as possible to install and use, regardless of your level of technical knowledge
we do not support Windows
