Secret of Mana was originally planned to be a launch title for the canceled SNES-CD add-on. 💿To fit the storage space of a SNES cartridge up to forty percent of the planned game needed to be dropped. ❌One of the most significant changes was the removal of the option to take multiple routes through the game that led to several possible endings. The plot that remained was different from the original story that had a much darker tone. 🎞️#RetroTrivia #retrogaming #gaming #games #videogames #rpg

@nazokiyoubinbou I'm really impressed by the fact that with all those cuts SoM nevertheless became such a masterpiece. Hard to imagine what could have been when the developers didn't have to deal with the cartridge limitations.

@repeatro It's too bad they never made a "definitive edition" on the PS1 or something then huh?Well, presumably Seiken Densetsu 3 gives us at least a rough idea of an upper limit since they doubled the ROM size of it but it still seems to be less than the maximum size for the system. (There are 48Mb ROMs on the SNES/SFC, but I wonder about that. 48Mb is an odd number. I guess it would take two chips to get that? 64Mb seems more likely to be the actual maximum, but I guess nothing used that due to costs.) So in other words with SD3 they felt at least a bit less limited and presumably did all they wanted. From what I hear SoM/SD was... quite expensive in its time. I've seen numbers quoted in the $100+ range (and that would have been in 1993 money!) So budget didn't limit them...
