My country has 8 parties in parliament. This poll is quite embarrassing, USA.

I've been told by blue maga that its a unrealistic purity test to be able to vote how I want.

In fptp, there's only ever going to be 2 parties who can win. If a 3rd one even shows up, it weakens the one it's closer aligned with, guaranteeing a victory for the party it's farther away from politically.

Normal politics can never exist with this system unfortunately.

GenX, I am so, so disappointed in us.

Now, if we can just get the old fucks out of the way (Gem X here).

I'd also note that I'm registered D mainly in opposition to Rs (and also because my state only allows voting in primaries within the party you're registered to), but my politics are definitely more progressive - if & when they get big enough to form their own party, I'm SO there.

GenX unite. All my life, I was told that I would get more conservative as I got older, and not only is the opposite happening to me, it's happening to the people I know, too.

Most people are pissed with the red and blue party, unlike what idiots keep saying a third party can win any time.

You should do this by income.

    (in my xp)

    70+ years old, nice.

65 years old, often a real entitled piece of work.

55 year olds, tolerable but might be upset they were starting to be shafted by dumb fucking cunts who think Reagan was anything but the stain left from a shart, with no shit left to use for fertilizer, but all don't realize it

45 year olds - struggling but wanting to keep their heads down and figure out how punk music can translate into solidarity

35 year olds - suicidal, wishing punk was back, and house/grunge/or just fucking Muse was better.

25 - whispering low enough praying that the vultures that are their elders don't start picking them off for having any of the unalienable rights such as life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness.

15 - keep quiet lads/lasses, that's not you, that's my advice. You are being tracked 23 hours a day. Everything you do in life will be recorded and used against you. Anything you say or do to help your fellow populous can and will be used against you in a court of law.

I'm independent and had no idea how many independents there are. I'd gladly vote for a truly leftist party if there were one at the national level (there are some in local elections). But that's not going to happen any time soon.

Please remember many of those independents would also vote for a fully fledged, "mask off" nazi party if one existed too - they're not all leftists, many are way worse than GOP supporters

The labels are not going to be accurate because Republican and Democrat carry a lot of baggage. Younger generations are still right and left but identify "centrist" and "lefty".

Well, it isn't a system that abides by labels...

I reckon the dems are middle-right, and middle in words only; their actions and many inactions say worse. And then the maga, which changes the political bell curve.

    • Note that as a non statamagician it could be a different curve.
    • If systems persist, consult your local kennedy.

Also, if unclear, i believe creatures deserve happiness and safety, which is why I am really interested in strangers genitals!

This is an attempt at satire btw - everyone human or non deserves safety, comfort and love.

And yet the independents won't create their own political party to finally bring about change for fear of being called "centrist"

Why isn't it possible? Is there a law against it?

So, there is no law against a third party. Got it.

The 56% which are independents can thus create their own party and win against either D and R.

You'd be right it they were 20%, or even 30% independent and split their votes between D and R. But with a majority, they can easily get past the post and make the changes they want. It just takes not giving up and crying "it's impossible".

It should be noted that "independent" isn't a monolithic position, so it's probably not possible to create a single party that satisfies them; you'll have people that find the democrats far too conservative to associate with, people that find the republicans too far left, people that do like one party's policies but object to the idea of formally identifying with a political party, and people that just ignore politics.

Setting that aside though, while there are technically enough independents to win, it's a classic collective action problem: if large but not big enough number of independents break off of whichever party they tend to vote for in absence of something more preferable to them, then they end up with the less preferred party to them, which means that creating a third party is worse unless you can get massive buy-in within a single election cycle. This isnt impossible in theory, as you've pointed out, but in practice these kind of problems rarely ever are solved this way, because people just don't tend to all suddenly agree on one course of action like that, and the knowledge that a failed attempt is worse than no attempt is available to everyone.

It's happened before in US politics a couple times even, but it hasn't ever fixed the underlying design issue that leads to two parties, the new one just takes over as one of the major two when one of the older ones gets so unpopular as to collapse entirely, and the same forces that lead to the previous party drifting away from the wishes of the majority of the country work upon the new one.

The “winner-take-all” nature means only the largest parties consistently win seats, marginalizing smaller groups. This structural advantage makes it difficult for new or minor parties to gain significant representation.

Independents are not a smaller group. They are 56% They are the bigger group and vote D or R because they have no other option. Independents can replace the D party.

The US isn't a lost cause. Proportional representational is only made harder by people like you, who scream till they're blue in the face that change is impossible while being surrounded by constant change.
