All black and trans people fired? Sounds like a ripe lawsuit.
post
Teen Vogue has been drawing conservative ire for years, and is unfortunately one more casualty in a long firing line of progressive youth publications, especially ones with a liberal view on teen sex education.
These journalists were astoundingly influential to a generation. I hope they end up on another platform so they can continue.
Until then, the well for quality journalism geared toward teens/teen girls is damn near dry, but here are a few (great) dregs:
https://buzzsawmag.org/ - Written, edited and published by students of Ithaca College, in the states. Mostly entertainment and pop culture with some science, politics and teen issues.
https://ourbodiesourselves.org/ - started by feminists in the 1960's to address the astonishing lack of sexual health education for women. Began as an often-updated print publication, now fully online. Focus is on sexual and reproductive health, includes stories from women around the world. Posts infrequent articles.
https://womensenews.org/ - Independent web publication that reports on stories about women and girls from around the world. Features a "Teen Voices" section.
I hope they consider reforming independently. Value comes from the workers and they were valuable. I'd definitely contribute/pay for them.
I'm an over 50 male and I really liked Teen Vogue. They often presented articles dealing with social justice. I felt as if it gave me a peak into how younger generations are affected and deal with this crazy world.
Here is the last article showing up in my RSS feed: https://www.teenvogue.com/story/amid-snap-benefits-suspension-more-young-people-will-go-hungry
Fashion industry is elitist and racist af. Not a surprise they purged the Black staffers first.
Remember Coco Chanel collaborated with the Nazis, this is a well known and documented fact and she is still venerated by the fashion industry. The only thing unrealistic about The Devil Wears Prada is that the boss wasn't throwing racist slurs casually around
“in the new issue: how to get the tradwife look”
That’s some dog shit. Gotta figure out how to cancel my subscription now, I’d set it up back in 2016 when they were out there killing it with good reporting.
Wired, employer of journalist Kevin Poulsin, who published Adrian Lamo's chat logs with Chelsea Manning, human rights activist, which resulted in her incarceration and psychological torture.
I wonder how Ms. Manning came to be arrested. 🤔
Yes. I won't get near a print or electronic edition of Vogue, but enjoyed quite a few Teen Vogue articles.
They have been speaking truth to/about power quite often in recent years, it was only a matter of time before they were gagged. They get a lot of credit for putting out what they did for as long as they did. The completely obliterated my view of what kind of a magazine I'd have expected Teen Vogue to be.
Sounds like they have enough following to just do it themselves
They'd need some way of funding themselves. Doing journalism professionally on the internet is not an easy way to make a living, especially when you're starting from scratch and self-employed. Even the larger media organizations struggle to make money from internet journalism.
ProPublica does. The Escapist staff quit en masse and formed Second Wind. Value comes from the workers. When you don't have the overhead of printing presses and the gatekeepers of print distribution there's not that much that the parent company actually contributes to the business.
I'd contribute to a Kickstarter and then become an ongoing supporter.
Shit. Makes me worried for Ars Technica, too. It’s also owned by Condé Nast.
Now we riot
186 employees worked at teen Vogue. 6 were laid off, all(?) were political reporters. Aftermath is that there is now only 1 woman of color on the editorial staff, and if we are to believe the tweet, no trans people remain either. Given the % of population which is black or trans, it should not be surprising that only 6 employees are black women or trans.
However, I think it reflects poorly on their hiring practices that these minorities were entirely concentrated in "political reporting," which really betrays what we already knew about rainbow capitalism: minorities are perceived to be political. Teen Vogue must have intentionally concentrated minorities into this one department, rather than hire equitably in all departments.
