Just seems like an odd choice to defederate it.

Same people that run lemmy.one that left CSAM undeleted for months. I simply don't trust the people to moderate the instance appropriately given they didn't do so with their Lemmy instance.

That's fair, although they are blaming moderation tools on the front page. Maybe discourse would be less prone to that sort of thing? Not sure, just seems like a cool instance.

I'm not exactly happy with it, I've stumbled upon useful threads on that forum from searches a couple of times, but I just can't justify the risks to user safety and potential legal culpability for the admin team. Their Lemmy instance was suppose to shut down in August, but yet it's still up and federating.

Because it's a troll instance and the admin is a fascist, the first rule of the instance is you "can't disrespect the president of the United States".

did they break any actual rules or is it just because they’re MAGA?

Yes, the admin engages in hate speech by calling being trans a mental illness (instance rule 1). The instance was also nothing but links to misinformation sources (instance rule 4) and people trying to 'troll the magas' when I added them to the defed list.

If you want to waste your energy debating magaheads, there's always !conservatives@hilariouschaos.com.

For starters, fuck magats. But accounts are free, make one on a different instance that hasn’t blocked them.

    Feddit.uk-er here.

Fuck having any of that brain rot maga bullshit showing up here!

flamingos-cant has absolutely made the right call de-federating from that fascist drivel instance.

    No tolerance for the intolerant!

Anyone not agree? Then fuck you too!

Intolerance for the intolerant does not have to be enforced with defederation, and unless their users are actively causing problems outside their instance or they are hosting illegal content i would argue shouldn't be enforced with defederation.

I am of the opinion that the better way of dealing with these types is speaking to them, and challenging their points. you might not be able to convert the ones already there, but you can present the other side of the argument to others who have yet to be sucked in.

They have a grand total of 19 users. it's not like they're not vastly outnumbered. Shutting them off and not challenging their views will only lead to them growing

Feel free to sign up to all the Nazi social media you want to, you can even go make a Shitter account.

But if you're gonna spend your time asking why Nazi's aren't allowed everywhere, people are gonna start wondering if you just like Nazis...

Especially when your reasoning is basically "for the lols"

even if only for the entertainment value

Maybe you're a kid and you didn't know what people would assume when you to bat for nazis

The whole point of the fediverse is to be able to engage with people from other instances from your home instance. We don't block the other end of the spectrum, grad and hexbear remain available from this instance despite them advocating for various past and present authoritarian regimes and conductors of crimes against humanity.

I wear my badges from them with pride

If you want to block the whole instance you're welcome to, from your own account.

Don't make my decisions for me, I'll talk to whomever i want to, and i should be able to do so from my home instance, as the Fediverse was designed to do

Don’t make my decisions for me

    Literally no one is...

If you dont like it, go make an account on maga.place itself?

Why should everyone else have to deal with fascists because you want them around?

And literally no one was talking about, and especially not defending hexbear. They're not "the other end of the spectrum" they're all rightwing authoritarians, they just tell different lies to people about it.

Don’t make my decisions for me, I’ll talk to whomever i want to, and i should be able to do so from my home instance, as the Fediverse was designed to do

    From what you're saying...

Every instance would have to federate with everyone...

You might find an instance that wants to do that. Or you can make your own and beg instances to federate with you I do t think you'll get 100% tho

It seems you're so upset because you don't understand how this works or what it's for

    Literally no one is…

Apart from whoever added maga.place to the defed list for feddit.uk (for the record, i'm not asserting that that was the wrong decision, just querying the reason behind it)

If you do t like it, go make an account on maga.place itself?

    1. i shouldn't have to
    2. for the same reason i left lemmy.ml, i am less subject to their (almost certainly shitty) moderation policies from a remote instance than i am from theirs

Why should everyone else have to deal with fascists because you want them around?

You don't have to. you have it within your power to block communities and instances in your account settings.

From what you’re saying… Every instance would have to federate with everyone…

yes, this is how lemmy works.

Or you can make your own and beg instances to federate with you I do t think you’ll get 100% tho

by default (as i understand it) everyone is federated. instance admins have to manually defederate if they want to. hence this post from me, a feddit.uk user asking the mods/admins in a feddit.uk meta community why they chose to make that decision.

If you're nicer, and asked questions, someone else might answer them, and you'll learn something

I have seen nothing to suggest this. please feel free to prove me wrong on that point

If you’re nicer, and asked questions

Please point out where i have been anything less than civil with anyone in the responses to my post

I did ask questions; this post was a question to the admins of my instance in a local community on my instance. It is of no concern to anyone who isn't a feddit.uk user

If you think the 'point' of the Fediverse is for every server to federate with every server, no exceptions, then let me ask you a Socratic question here: Why do you think defederation exists? This is a feature that is part of the Fediverse, and it serves an important purpose.

If you think the ‘point’ of the Fediverse is for every server to federate with every server, no exceptions

At no point did i say that. De-federation should be only used where severe disruption is being caused by an instance, there are technical incompatibilities, or there is a danger of illegal content being federated across.

feddit.uk has always had a light hand when it comes to censorship, which is one of the reasons i came here after lemmy.ml

Sounds like you should look for a server that is more closely aligned with your interests. That too is a feature of the Fediverse, rather than expecting every server to do things your way.

I am not expecting every server to do things my way, i am trying to foment a discussion with other members of my instance about a top level moderation decision and presenting my viewpoint alongside that. As a somewhat regular contributor to the running costs of this instance i would like to see at least some community discussion before a decision is taken to take the drastic step of de-federation for idealistic reasons

Instead i have been dogpiled by emotional reactions and downvotes from people from other instances who have exactly zero stake in the argument since internal feddit.uk moderation decisions do not affect other instances. it's frankly astounding that i managed to get an admin response with how buried this post got

I think discourse is helpful. Horrible ideas tend to fester if left in echo chambers.

If you're only here to talk to like minded individuals you might as well talk to a mirror

  • You don't want to have discourse with me? Trying to make an echo chamber?

I'm just being facetious, but maga people are truly miserable to be around. At best, you'll be casting pearls before swine. At worst, you're advocating giving them more of a platform to be garbage people on. That latter one is bad for everybody.
