I legitimately do not understand how this is a thing that people want. Never in my life have I thought to myself ‘I’d really like a realistic looking photo of myself doing something that did not happen.’ Like, outside of scammers, why is this something somebody would want?

scammers and people who live their (fake) life on social media are the exact people who need something like this. Unfortunately for us all that is the majority.

The fake life on social thing is very weird to me. It’s one (if that) step removed from pathological lying. Idk, I just don’t see how trying to make others jealous of a thing that I never did would make me feel better. I guess it’s the dopamine hit of a ‘like’, but to me it just seems totally disconnected.

I can understand overplaying something you did a little, but to use the OP example of a woman laying in a field with an astronaut, is there really that many people going ‘well me and my boyfriend had a great date the other day. Sorry you can’t meet him, he’s back in fucking space. Long distance is hard.’

I guess they should have asked the AI to come up with a prompt that isn't super creepy and stalkerish.

our democracy is already straining under the flood of misinformation and over-information; this will just sink the final nail in the coffin. my parents already can’t tell current ai slop from actual news and video

Only thing I have ised this for was making funny edit to have fun with my family and removig unwanted elements from photos (people on beach or trash in alleys), but I can imagine people will use this to fake their online lives even more.

This is a tool, and like all tools, it has equal ability to be used for the good or for the bad. If all you ever look for is the bad, then you will never realize the good.

What is the purpose of AI generated images? When it comes to LLMs I can sort of understand them as Siri was popular long before AI, but what function does AI generated images fill in a normal person's life?

Anything you'd normally google an image for. You want a background or an icon or an image for a character. Anything a business would want to pay someone for, logos, branding etc. People who lack artistic skills and want the easy way to get an idea "on paper". And of course porn

Pretty much everyone at the DnD tables I frequent is in love with slop for their characters. Or environments. I shudder. "No it's not too bad, look at this". Of course it's not all too awful looking, that's why AI keeps removing artists of jobs. But people using AI for quick images of their characters don't directly affect this, they don't care about this, or understand any of it. As an artist I can see the convenience for them, and if it wasn't for the upheaval AI is causing, the morals behind it and who profits, I wouldn't have a problem with people using it in this way.

Fuck, that's depressing. In a setting as creative, authentic, and human as D&D, people are acquiescing to chatbots? Weird.

Yeah, its sad. I see it in my friend group too. Me and 1 other person are the only ones that feel grossed out by it. I just dont understand the fascination people have but I guess we are all monke and this is the new shiny thing people think is cool.

Remove the damage from the items you’re hawking on Craigslistzuckmarketplace until the buyer’s driven an hour and it’s too late

See a single use case that makes sense here? (Forcing copy/paste)

I tried out the photos app to make a picture a video. It just kept making me blow bubbles in almost every video. It's very useless as it only has "subtle movement" or "I'm feeling lucky" Not impressed.

lol @ their Google Photos AI attempt, “now you can modify your photos so they appear to portray something that never happened!”

(Naw not restoration or removing blemishes or crowds or fixing an unfortunate aspect, like “now you’re at the beach when you weren’t!)
