The Creature met an ancestor! 🦣 🦴 πŸ›οΈ

#TheLaBreaTarPits #LosAngeles #California #Fossils #Merchtodon #Paleontology #Photo #Photography #Plushtodon #LetyDoesSelfies

Photo of Lety and the Creature Mastodon stuffed toy standing in front of a mastodon museum exhibit under warm, indoor lighting. From top to bottom, Lety is shown wearing a short, white, long-sleeve dress with red floral print and brown sandals. Her body is roughly facing the camera, the Creature in her arms, as she turns her and the Creature back towards her left to look up at the massive fossilized skeleton of an American mastodon. On the floor between Lety and the skeleton is an exhibit sign reading β€œAmerican mastodon”, β€œ(Mammut americanum)”, β€œ2 million to 10,000 years ago”, with a map showing the species' historical range across North America and some other out-of-focus text. In the background are several other museum visitors viewing smaller fossil displays in glass cases along a back wall.

@lety@doesstuff.social I was never really into social media (and maybe this was subconscious) but I joined Mastodon after realising it was an anagram of β€œNot so mad.” It felt like the total opposite of Twitter!
(Nice pic by the way.)

@lety@doesstuff.social This is like the most fediverse post ever. It’s got an actual mastodon, someone who still masks (not a lot of us do, but probably more on the fediverse than anywhere else), beautifully framed photo, whimsical, and great alt text.

10/10 no notes. (Other than all the notes I just made)

And the behemoth spoke, delivering a message forwarded from beyond the tar pits: "Child, hear my words. Do not become a giant! Do not try to dominate! My kind are long dead. Remain as small, agile groups, free to roam and mix at will β€” a federation, if you will, not a megafauna. Move fast and adapt! Heed my warning or perish!"

(Also, I love the tar pits!)

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social Nice to meet you, Alex! I don't have a Chinese name lmao, too anxious to come up with one.

@lety@doesstuff.social The name is just a nickname. If you want to give yourself one, that's fine. My Chinese name is not Alex, it's just for the convenience of calling me by my international friends.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social The idea of naming myself gives me so much anxiety lol. How'd you come up with Alex?

@lety@doesstuff.social My original name was Jack, which was given by my English teacher. I was named Alex because the protagonist of the game Prototype is named Alex Mercer, so I used the name Alex.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social Lmao, didn't see that one coming. That's not bad.

My name gets transliterated as θŠθ’‚ a lot by news sites and whatever. Sounds OK so, I kinda just roll with that.

When asked, I've given 桷琳 as my name, but I worry that sounds super modern and pretentious :google_emoji_kitchen_blob_and_confounded_face_mashup:

@lety@doesstuff.social Does 桷琳 have any meaning? But Hailin has a nice pronunciation, and the two characters alone also sound good in Chinese.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social I like the ocean and green's my favorite color, that's about as much thought as I put into it haha

Glad to hear it comes across OK and not like, the most foreign try-hard name ever

@lety@doesstuff.social It sounds good and conforms to the principles of using Chinese names. It just has no deep meaning. When combined with a Chinese surname, ordinary people can't tell that this is a foreigner using it.

  • @lety@doesstuff.social China used to have this kind of anxiety, but as Chinese society developed, people's awareness continued to improve, and they gradually began to gain a clearer understanding and open up their minds. Actually, you don't need to be overly anxious; just be happy in your own subjective ideals, as long as it doesn't violate laws and morals. Other people's opinions are just their own.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social No, the ocean's considered blue in the West but ηŽ‰ is green, and that sorta appears in 琳 as a radical, which has an L sound like in Lety, so that's where that bit came from

@lety@doesstuff.social You are right. Lin does mean beautiful jade. You have a certain understanding of Chinese culture. Thank you very much for your recognition of Chinese culture.

@lety@doesstuff.social Her feet are turned toward the camera/viewer, making the image not about the mastodons, or her, but about the gaze, about who exists in this moment for whom.

This one's short, and very enlightening, and old standby in college art classes: https://archive.org/details/WaysOfSeeingByJohnBerger

But lord knows you don't need to read a whole book to try to understand a snarky comment... that really should have been somehow directed at the Asian girl ads I've been getting on YouTube lately.
