The Creature met an ancestor! 🦣 🦴 🏛️

Photo of Lety and the Creature Mastodon stuffed toy standing in front of a mastodon museum exhibit under warm, indoor lighting. From top to bottom, Lety is shown wearing a short, white, long-sleeve dress with red floral print and brown sandals. Her body is roughly facing the camera, the Creature in her arms, as she turns her and the Creature back towards her left to look up at the massive fossilized skeleton of an American mastodon. On the floor between Lety and the skeleton is an exhibit sign reading “American mastodon”, “(Mammut americanum)”, “2 million to 10,000 years ago”, with a map showing the species' historical range across North America and some other out-of-focus text. In the background are several other museum visitors viewing smaller fossil displays in glass cases along a back wall.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social Nice to meet you, Alex! I don't have a Chinese name lmao, too anxious to come up with one.

@lety@doesstuff.social The name is just a nickname. If you want to give yourself one, that's fine. My Chinese name is not Alex, it's just for the convenience of calling me by my international friends.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social The idea of naming myself gives me so much anxiety lol. How'd you come up with Alex?

@lety@doesstuff.social My original name was Jack, which was given by my English teacher. I was named Alex because the protagonist of the game Prototype is named Alex Mercer, so I used the name Alex.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social Lmao, didn't see that one coming. That's not bad.

My name gets transliterated as 萊蒂 a lot by news sites and whatever. Sounds OK so, I kinda just roll with that.

When asked, I've given 海琳 as my name, but I worry that sounds super modern and pretentious :google_emoji_kitchen_blob_and_confounded_face_mashup:

@lety@doesstuff.social Does 海琳 have any meaning? But Hailin has a nice pronunciation, and the two characters alone also sound good in Chinese.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social I like the ocean and green's my favorite color, that's about as much thought as I put into it haha

Glad to hear it comes across OK and not like, the most foreign try-hard name ever

@lety@doesstuff.social I saw that you said you like green. Is green the color of the sea?

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social No, the ocean's considered blue in the West but 玉 is green, and that sorta appears in 琳 as a radical, which has an L sound like in Lety, so that's where that bit came from

@lety@doesstuff.social You are right. Lin does mean beautiful jade. You have a certain understanding of Chinese culture. Thank you very much for your recognition of Chinese culture.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social Awh, thanks lol. Understanding Chinese is largely a side effect of living in Los Angeles, if you wanna see something horribly embarrassing you should listen to me attempt to speak it lmao

@lety@doesstuff.social It sounds good and conforms to the principles of using Chinese names. It just has no deep meaning. When combined with a Chinese surname, ordinary people can't tell that this is a foreigner using it.

@GhostKingCN@mastodon.social Ayyy, that's what I was going for. Nice! That's a huge weight lifted off my chest, guess that's what I'll go by formally more often

@lety@doesstuff.social China used to have this kind of anxiety, but as Chinese society developed, people's awareness continued to improve, and they gradually began to gain a clearer understanding and open up their minds. Actually, you don't need to be overly anxious; just be happy in your own subjective ideals, as long as it doesn't violate laws and morals. Other people's opinions are just their own.
