The Creature met an ancestor! 🦣 🦴 🏛️

#TheLaBreaTarPits #LosAngeles #California #Fossils #Merchtodon #Paleontology #Photo #Photography #Plushtodon #LetyDoesSelfies

Photo of Lety and the Creature Mastodon stuffed toy standing in front of a mastodon museum exhibit under warm, indoor lighting. From top to bottom, Lety is shown wearing a short, white, long-sleeve dress with red floral print and brown sandals. Her body is roughly facing the camera, the Creature in her arms, as she turns her and the Creature back towards her left to look up at the massive fossilized skeleton of an American mastodon. On the floor between Lety and the skeleton is an exhibit sign reading “American mastodon”, “(Mammut americanum)”, “2 million to 10,000 years ago”, with a map showing the species' historical range across North America and some other out-of-focus text. In the background are several other museum visitors viewing smaller fossil displays in glass cases along a back wall.

@janisf@mstdn.social I've been trying to make sense of this joke for days, please explain it to me :google_emoji_kitchen_blob_and_loudly_crying_face_mashup:

@lety@doesstuff.social Her feet are turned toward the camera/viewer, making the image not about the mastodons, or her, but about the gaze, about who exists in this moment for whom.

This one's short, and very enlightening, and old standby in college art classes: https://archive.org/details/WaysOfSeeingByJohnBerger

But lord knows you don't need to read a whole book to try to understand a snarky comment... that really should have been somehow directed at the Asian girl ads I've been getting on YouTube lately.
