Okay, so I tried Tuta and found the UI clunky and buggy. I tried Mailbox.org and their billing is a mess and they took my money without crediting the account. *(I have a pending ticket, we'll see what they said.)

I do have a proton mail account, but I haven't given them $ yet because of... well you know. Sadly, out of the three I've tried their product is the best.

Wondering what to check out next. I really want to ditch the G but I'm evaluating services before I jump off the ledge this time.

Mailbox.org is currently the best alternative. I think they will resolve your issue.

Love Mailbox. Their website is horrible but once you connect your email to your local applications it’s perfect.

The website is horrific and not being able to find what I want on there is what is putting me off switching to them right now

It’s easy to find what you want, the website is simply slow.

Maybe I'm just being blind then. I can deal with slow I just didn't find what I wanted and the search in the help section didnt help.

I'll give it another chance and have a look. I just barely know what I'm doing with custom domains yet as this is my first forray and so may have been looking at what I needed and didnt realise :)

Post here if you get stuck. Others will help.

I’m in the process of moving from Proton to mailbox.org and found the information I needed in the knowledge base (and a little googling to clarify how their instructions relate to my domain provider).

I don't play well with clients - I prefer webmail. Mailbox.org is better than Tuta but yea, it's not 5 stars. Although I am planning on having whatever service I land on host the mail and use Nextcloud's email so it's kind of what you said anyway.

  • Honestly, bring on the down votes but Proton is a massive, massive improvement over google. Bring your own domain into it and then you can switch providers at a later time hassle free if they do something annoying enough to warrant the switch.

Ive seen the hate, I agree; fuck the CEO, but compared to google it is wildly the better the better choice

It doesn't look bad but 3 aliases free and no custom domain AFAIK

Fastmail. They do just mail and aren’t attempting to be a full Google Suite replacement.

Been there for almost a decade with zero issues.

Fastmail has servers in the US, which is not great for privacy. Even if you use their EU server there's still a copy of your data in the US:

Resilient replicas of your data will live in the US (for now). As we only have one location in Europe so far, the geographically separate copy will remain on servers in one of our US locations.

Given that it's November, if you aren't in a hurry you might want to check whether whatever provider you decide to go with had a Black Friday sale last year. I wouldn't let a sale be a deciding factor on what to use, but if a service you want to try is likely to have a sale in a few weeks you may as well wait.

The fact that I have to process a manual payment every month is pretty bad. Also, they just seem to have issues with most American debit or credit cards - I could only get one to work without "Unknown Error" every time. Then the billing error where I paid, received 3 separate confirmation emails and 3 days later they restricted my account for non payment.

You don’t have to do a monthly manual payment, I buy a few years at a time (USA) and they email me when it’s getting low. Not sure what billing issues you’re seeing but that sounds v annoying

I like migadu.com. Not sure why it's never recommended. OK, the UI is outdated, but i rarely have to go there anyway. Been using it for 2-3 years now, not a single hiccup yet.

If proton works great for you, use it. But stay alert.

Otherwise, i would give tuta a chance. There's also infomaniak.

I use Posteo, but Thundermail seems okay (if you can overlook Mozilla).

Buy a personal domain with mythic beasts and use their default settings to set it up as a mailbox, then connect to it with Thunderbird

wait for it, another new one that isn't corrupt (yet) will spring up any time now to keep a protocol that was never private and by all rights should be left to die, alive.
