Some states already use ranked choice voting, because each state gets to decide how to run their own elections. Alaska does, for example. I'm honestly not sure what happens if we abolish the electoral college and just count votes directly. If some states use ranked choice and some don't, how do we count those votes fairly? Would the federal government have to take over presidential elections from the states? Would that require a constitutional amendment? Given what's going on with the federal government right now, is that a power we would want them to have?

Democrats' sweeping statehouse gains Tuesday have opened a path to effectively replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote in time for the 2028 presidential election — without needing to amend the Constitution.

Why it matters: The results could give Democrats the legislative power to fundamentally change how America picks its president, potentially ending the possibility of winning the White House while losing the national popular vote.

Driving the news: Democrats have won control of the governorship and both legislative chambers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin and Nevada, enough to push an agreement called**** the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact beyond the 270-vote threshold required to take effect.

    • The compact has been enacted by 18 states and Washington, D.C.**** since launching in 2006, representing 222 electoral votes so far.

    • The agreement only kicks in when participating states collectively control at least 270 electoral votes. The five new Democratic trifectas could bring the total to 283.

Would be awesome, but I think states cant do compacts without congressional approval, and is sure to be challenged regardless and may not make it out of litigation by 2028 elections. That said, it would be awesome, throw it on the to-do list!

There will definitely be challenges to it. And the current Supreme Court will definitely not side with us on it. But definitely fun to think about as a possibility. First: Remove Trump. Then get on to business.
