Why the hell are goddamn freezers connected to the net lol

I mean, I could see it being connected to an intranet so one can monitor the temperatures, but having them connected to the world web? Why? Money? Pay the company so they can control your freezers from Bangladesh where labour costs are horrendously low?

The better question is why they didn't simply secure access from the WAN. This is dead simple and there are multiple, simple ways to do it. Sounds like the interface was open to anyone with a user/pass. No one should have been able to see the existence of that interface.

  • There's probably some selection bias in who's getting hit.

I have no idea if there are coolers that have a network connection as part of some warranty thing with the installation, but I do know that some medicines have to be kept cool. Is anyone keeping analog temp records in medicine coolers to make sure they haven't been warmed up to damage what's inside and cooled back down again?

Vulnerable mgmt interfaces on the internet with the date as the password? This doesn’t qualify as a cyberattack. Mischief maybe

  • On the other hand, it was a tradition where I'm from to use the snowed-in windows on the second floor to store all manner of fridge items by opening the window and scooping out cubbies for them before closing the window to keep them cool. (and you warm, ofc) Beers, ice cream, tv dinners, you name it!

Hell, we had glass door fridges long before they were invented! 🤣
