When I first saw this i thought it was a hobbit graphic novel illu bý Tove. I got really excited. This is still neat though.

That Gollum is...
I mean, right off the bat: how's that gonna work later, when he's "guiding" Sam & Frodo? When Faramir's men catch him? So many questions. 😅
Truth.
Altho Jansson's emphasis here was solely on The Hobbit, with no sense of continuity nor artistic attempt to integrate it in to the overall Middle Earth world. Just taking it back to its original, whimsical roots, so to speak.
Interesting. I like the design of Gollum, but the Lester Abrams character design in the 1977 cartoon was the BEST adaptation IMO. Gollum and the goblins (orcs in the movies) were exceptionally well done.
This was my first introduction to The Hobbit back in the day! I'm looking forward to introducing my moomin-obsessed baby to this crossover in a few years.
Probably thought the name came from golem.
Gollum's looks are described a bit oddly in the books. Particularly in the earliest editions, which didn't mention that he was supposed to be small. So he had many different looks.
Amazing. I'm going to cross-post this.
For those who don't mind occasionally visiting the EE, here are some really cool, unique Russian illustrations:
