By mid-September, we received available dates at these arenas through the end of the year. But once they found out these were my benefit shows for Palestine, those dates were suddenly off the table.

The doors were closed. The conversations were all different, but the result was the same. The shows were not going to be allowed to happen in these venues.

I don't give a single fuck how many Americans have no interest in threatening Canada. I have a great deal of interest in how many are willing to stop it. Right now, to all intents and purposes, that number is zero.

Fuck you and your cautionary tale. Canada has lived with the cautionary tale of America for our entire existence and before. For all Carney's faults, at least his solution to a threat from a former ally is to make new allies, not try to bully or 'warn' Canada and Canadians like has happened by America so many times before, and now you. We don't need your fucking history lesson. I spent half a day at work watching two towers and the illusion of freedom fall in America. I saw Newfoundlanders take in more Americans than seemed possible when American airspace was shut down. We lived through this tragedy right beside you and less than 30 years later got subjected to all this bullshit over the last two years. WE KNOW.

Canadians are very polite until you cross a line. It's a couple paces behind you. Step back.

This reads like a slightly drunk "tarps off bud", not looking to fight with you man. I prefer learning from others mistakes, but some we just have to make for ourselves and "history repeats itself" is a classic for a reason. Good luck up there, eh?

You are so fucking obtuse, I have to believe you suffered under the American education system. What in there, or the previous posters comments, makes you believe we suffer from the same lack of discrimination that you and the leaders of your country seem to share? The previous poster explicitly gave Mackelmore a pass because of the positive actions he's taken. I mentioned our national leader building new ties with willing partners rather than begging or railing at the feet of our abuser. We aren't attacking an ally who disagreed with us, as in the case of "Freedom Fries" (by the way, frenching is the way fries are cut, so just another American educational self-own). We are refusing to take bullshit from a former close and now untrustworthy ally who is engaging in economic warfare with us after verbally threatening our sovereignty. We watch America and its antics very closely up here, much like someone would watch the 800 lb gorilla in the room, and for the same reason. We don't need you to tell us to watch you and learn from your mistakes. Watching you is an existential necessity for us. And yes, history does repeat itself. Go read some and apply the lessons learned.

Freedom Fries were an absolute legendary self own, an archetypal self own, an all too poignant metaphor for the crass fear-based manipulation and prideful chest-beating by which a nation was led to act against its own interests by fundamentalists, oil executives, and good old fashioned war profiteers

...can you really not see any relevance here?

Yes. Are you suggesting we just hold hands with America while they try to ruin our economy for the sake of fundamentalists, oil execs, and war profiteers? No one in this thread has suggested any recriminations towards Mackelmore, only not funding and supporting the nation that is threatening us.

So clearly you and I aren't seeing the same thing, so spell out your stance as clearly and as simply as I did mine, and let's see which makes more sense. No metaphors, no allusions to past events, just what you think people here are advocating for and the probable result.

I barely have one, and really don't have much of an idea what yours is or why there's an argument here! Clearly and simply my ass. People are so damn angry and afraid right now, across the world. The closest thing I have to a "stance" here is that things are really dang bad in the US right now and it sucks to see our bullshit pushing/dragging the rest of the world into fascism along with us. Boycotting a band who's music and ideals you both enjoy because of what country they're from is right up there with changing your snack food names as far as self owns go, that shouldn't even be on the table. Anywhere near the table! A flag waving, anthem singing sense of national pride is not a good thing. It is a weapon every state uses against its people. The other guy's "I guess we'll make an exception for mackelmore this time" reminded me way too much of the shit we were hearing here 20 years back about any countries that didn't want to come party in Iraq with us, and it's like. Fuck, not again, why can't we learn, please let someone do better

The "probable result" I'm so damn frustrated by is continuing to emulate our behavior as a response to our behavior and ending up with concentration camps of your own in another 20 years. People are people, nations are bullshit, I don't have any answers and it's past my bedtime. Hold hands with anyone you can and try to build a better world

Your sentiments are fine, your grasp of how politics affects our daily lives, and comprehension of what people are saying about Mackelmore in this post, are sadly lacking. I can say nations are bullshit til im blue in the face, but we still have massive tariffs with our largest trading partner right now, which impacts the daily lives of nearly everyone in my country, and I care about their well-being. Giving more money than necessary to the people who could put a stop to this is the act of fools. I don't understand how I can keep talking about building stronger ties with other allies and you hear nationalistic flag-waving. If you had any understanding about Canadian history, you'd know that we're usually about 10 years behind America, which means we tend to avoid the really big fuckups. But don't worry, I am familiar with Canadian history. I know we sent Jews back to Germany before the internment camps and the holocaust. I know we had camps for Germans and Japanese in WWII, and that my first-generation Canadian grandfather likely wasn't one of them because he wasn't considered a significant enough threat and running his farm supported the war effort. But we avoided the bank collapse of 2008, and I think we will also avoid the jackbooted thugs in our streets and locking up people primarily due to their skin color for the same reason. Because, as I said before, we do watch what happens in America and often learn from your mistakes.

Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't share your opinions, but you will have to think about them a bit more before I will give them any weight. There's a lot more history and politics than what happened in less than half of North America in 600 years, and we as Canadians don't need advice from a member of a country that has people around the world, including their own country, half jokingly saying that wars are how they learn where other countries are on the map.
