Words exist in context. If I called my female boss a bitch because I perceived her as domineering or demanding, that'd be out of line. If I call someone a dumb bitch for running one of the most toxic accounts on social media posting nonsensical disinformation, that's very different. While I understand that being called a bitch can be very hurtful, I'm not calling you one, I'm calling someone else one, so being offended on their behalf is silly. I'm not gonna censor myself because someone might have a negative association with a word. And before someone says "I've heard the same logic applied to the n word" cool well I'm not applying it to the n word, I already don't say that so I don't need to censor myself.

Just take the bitch part away and substitute it for something else like retard or the nword and think for a second how the usage of this word can still affect the broader demographic

Etymologically speaking bitch refers only to women, but in modern usage the pejorative is used for both genders

Not the women who aren't bitches, since it's not directed at them.

I've seen people use that exact justification for the n-word.

If you're really gonna try and act like bitch and the n word exist on the same plane of cruelty and offensiveness you're just being flatly disingenuous.

Many people refuse to acknowledge the nuance of language development. Especially when mixed with what is socially acceptable. Because that'd mean conceding they could be hurting people.

I'll join you in the downvotes. You may be oversimplifying a bit too, but I see where you're coming from.

Yeah I mean I'm not saying it's the same level I'm just saying I've heard the same logic. "Just because I say [n-word] doesn't mean I hate black people, I only hate the ones that act like [n-words]." You'll hear the same justification for just about any slur whenever anyone challenges it. "Nothing against people with mental disabilities, I just hate people who act like r-----ds." "Nothing against queer people, I just hate the ones who act like f----ts." Anyone who recognizes that it doesn't hold up in those cases should understand that it doesn't hold up here.

But they have no answer to that, so all they can do is act like I'm equating the two, when in fact the whole point is to use a more extreme example to more clearly demonstrate the problem.

I totally agree, except the final paragraph. I think the source of the communication issue is a combination of perceived tone in your initial comment and the sensitivity of the subject. Not to fully blame either. So I don't think people are being belligerent or willfully ignorant.

Conversations like these are a minefield, so don't take it personally if you stumble. And remember why the minefield is there in the first place. Sometimes you just gotta back out, or set off more mines you meant to disarm.

Metaphor got a bit lost, but I think you get the point.
