Why do you think so? I don’t believe it has such an impact. Karma is nice for some people because of whatever reasons they have and everyone else just don’t care about it.

Only impact I can see is communities requiring Karma to post. But that shouldn’t be too much of an issue for most users.

Karma systems invalidate someone's way of thinking. You may not realize how much people will say or do anything to feel better about themselves seeing a stupid number go up. And the more meaningless points that a user has, they get a god complex by thinking they can say or do no wrong.

A lot of the people I've confronted on this platform and in the past, are assholes with lots of points.

I don't see the point in karma systems at all. It isn't about making posts the most seen. It's about people chasing validity.

As long as the karma isn’t linked to any decision making power, how would it influence me if someone feels like a god and becomes an asshole? Assholes are everywhere with and without karma. And being an asshole with lots of karma fast leads to losing all of it again through downvotes.

I couldn’t care less about karma, but if it makes someone happy or more attached to use PieFed/Lemmy, go for it.

    Cool, cool.

Enough people do care and attribute value that it leads to negative outcomes. On reddit having higher karma numbers was treated as a user being 'worth more' for decisions. After a decade or so not having karma on a new account led to negative experience for new users by being gated out of popular communities until they farmed some karma.

Yeah, but you didn’t answered my question. How would it affect me without being linked to such restrictions?

However, I can see a point communities trying to set a low limit to decrease spamming a little bit. And I also can see communities that would like to have people involved in comments first before they are allowed to post. Sure, most communities don’t need such a rule, but (community-based) karma could be a way to make something like that easily achievable.

The good part compared to Reddit is: in Fediverse its way easier to copy a popular community. CommunityXY@piefed.world requires Karma now to post and you don’t like this rule? Start communityXY@piefed.zip without that rule and let the people decide what they prefer.
