Welcome to this week’s casual kōrero thread!

This post will be pinned in this community so you can always find it, and will stay for about a week until replaced by the next one.

It’s for talking about anything that might not justify a full post. For example:

  • Something interesting that happened to you
  • Something humourous that happened to you
  • Something frustrating that happened to you
  • A quick question
  • A request for recommendations
  • Pictures of your pet
  • A picture of a cloud that kind of looks like an elephant
  • Anything else, there are no rules (except the rule)

So how’s it going?

I have been migrating off Proton 😮‍💨. Two years ago I signed up for a 2 year plan. Then the CEO started making Trump supporting comments but it was too late. Now it's coming up for renewal, and he starts talking about how no one should be testing or understanding just tell the AI what to do, and he's treating employees like shit.

I looked at Fastmail but apparently they are union-busters so have landed with Tuta for now. Luckily I have my own domain so the hardest part was importing all my mail 1000 at a time as it crashed trying to do them all at once.

I ended up with AirVPN for a VPN.

I use forwardmail which initially just offered forwarding, but then added POP3 and IMAP4.

I also have a public GPG key so that quite a few email senders will automatically encrypt it before transmission.

Both solve a different problem that proton/tuta do though.

How does the public GPG thing work? It automatically sends it and is used transparently to the recipient or do they have to set something up?

I am not sold on Tuta TBH. No auto-forwarding to another address, and the apps feel funny in a way that's hard to describe. Will give them more time to decide.

Generate a key and you publish your public key... somewhere, I forget: I think GPG's directory. At least the gpg site has instructions: https://emailselfdefense.fsf.org/en/

Thanks for the link! I can't see how to do this in Tuta and Tuta doesn't support standard clients because of their encrypted email inbox. Annoying, I have to pick between the email provider not being able to read my emails, or the email being encrypted in transit unless it's between Tuta accounts.

I guess if I use a non-E2E encrypted service and add a GPG key in my clients then I guess this protects it from the provider? But then I have to pick a provider who aren't dicks. Why can't companies just not be dicks.
