On the Who’s With Me? podcast, the soccer legend and out lesbian was asked by host W. Kamau Bell why she wasn’t afraid of trans women in sports. Rapinoe responded by challenging a familiar anti-trans talking point: that athletes can simply declare themselves women and compete.

“There’s a lot that trans people have to go through if you’re a trans person in sports to even play,” she began. “It’s like you couldn’t just say one day, 'I’m a woman,' and go play. That’s not how it works.”

What an absolute dig at Quinn, the trans holding midfielder she played 4 seasons with at the Reign.

I don't remember them as being particularly close, but I don't remember any kind of animosity either. Pinoe had very kind things to say about Quinn being the first out trans person to win an Olympic medal. I think it's more that Pinoe understands that what's getting play in the left-leaning media is "this is a distraction from the real issues," and so she chose a framing (an "elite" athlete) that plays to that, and Quinn is just catching strays.
