I hope for a day that people look back at this image and don't understand why this was a "radical act that almost makes me tear up".

I'm looking at it right now and don't understand what's radical about it.

This may seem very intimate if you're an Anglo but in some cultures this is not more than shaking hands... The kiss on the cheek isn't very radical, the fact that she's is a transwoman in office in Brasil, is!

I’m in the comments looking for a reason… I mean, it was quite common to have men kiss on the cheek in some political spaces… what does being trans change to the equation? Is that “worse”?

Have you paid attention to politics lately? Obviously it isn't actually worse, but the left and right almost everywhere right now are racing to villainize trans people. Most politicians will do everything they can to avoid even being seen in the same room as a trans person right now.

It would be like an American politician in 1984 putting his arm around a a gay man for a photo op. Or indeed shaking his hand.

She was another level altogether. Far far more "radical/extreme" than Mr Rogers or politicians shaking hands with gay folks.

Those were black skinned, african children from the poorest demographics with a deadly illness that was rumoured to spread thru handshakes and toilet seats.

A bonified, real life princess from a white supremacist country that was still coming down from their epic high being the most powerful, expansive empire in human history. Sitting with sick children in Africa. Touching them. Embracing them. Comforting them. While many others in the rest of that "royal family" was busy raping and killing children.

I hate monarchy but she's the only good "royalty" i know of in recent history.

It's like Mr. Rogers sharing a soak in the pool with a black character in the 60s.

Black person, my dude. A full blown, dark skinned, african descent, descendent-of-slaves black american citizen. Not a character.

I'm happy you got your little endorphin rush picking this trivial fight but what I said was in no way deserving of your condescension.

One could even argue it's more relevant to clarify it was a character and not just a random guy in private to drive home the significance of it being televized.

I won't, though, because anyone nitpicking a comment like that is barely worth the time to tell off.

No fight here, random person. Or condescension.

You do you, champ. Black folks are "characters" in your world. At least that's an upgrade on how your grandparents talked about black folks...

You clearly learned nothing from that "black character" or the fact that Fred Rogers wanted kids to see black folks as equal, respectable, dignified citizens. Not "characters"...

You're right, there was no condescension there. I should have known you were coming from a place of genuine concern, my dude. You were able to learn everything about this clearly ignorant fool from one comment and used it as an opportunity to educate them. We're all so proud of you for carrying on the leftist tradition of infighting over the dumbest shit imaginable.

    That's hobbyless behavior.

    Champ.

Black folks are "characters" to you and that's how you do things in your life.

    You do you.

    Champ.

All right so opinions on if I'm secretly racist or not aside..let's have a quick chat about comedic insults.

You got hit with a classic "emphasizing their patronizing word choice by making it a whole sentence" and then you...used it right back? You have effectively just said "no, YOU'RE the butthead!!!" like a child in their first argument who hasn't developed wit. But this is worse because there was no rush to reply. You had time to craft a clever jab and opted to repeat the joke instead. What does that say about you?

Not that it was all that clever to begin with but you have to realize that this just doesn't hit nearly as hard when you're the second person to say it. You don't look cool, you look like the cheap copy.

I'll catch you in another thread, hombre
