My Midwestern grandparents would apparently tell their kids: "roll up the windows and lock the doors, we're going through n-town." when they drove through the city.

I heard similar from various sources growing up, but replace the slur with “ghetto”.

Same message, same racism, except with an extra layer of classism. Thankfully, those people are all dead now. :)
