All the trolls are great but I especially love Nepeta. Vriska is cool as fuck though and Karkat is basically my spirit animal

I've never critically analyzed Homestuck tbh, despite doing multiple readthroughs. I could see how it would be a distaction from the beta kids, but imo at around the time they were introduced things had sort of lulled for them. I'm not sure how much story there is to tell with 4 main characters who are all friends with each other. The trolls provided much needed tension the story lacked once everyone got in the game. It's quite an interesting take you have, from what I've seen most people think Homestuck only gets good once the trolls are introduced lol.

Though, I do agree with the character oversaturation, suddenly jumping from 4 to 16 characters got busy fast, especially with Hussie trying to speed run the entire troll session and give each character their spotlights. I'm not sure if he made it work.

I'm not sure what you mean by the writing for them being systematic though.

Maybe formulaic is a better description. I saw it at the time as here's a character, here are their stats, they are evil in some way. At least with some characters. Perhaps I was hoping to learn about them more slowly and organically. Though when you need to introduce a bunch of new characters things are too quick.

Mind this was just over a decade or two ago, and my more recent (sadly partial) re-read did let me appreciate things a bit more.

Fair enough, though I would argue we do learn a lot about them organically, specifically through their relationships to other trolls, past actions they've done, and blink-and-you-miss-it moments in cutscenes. Their introduction scenes moreso set up the framework of the character, and a lot of them develop on that, though some remain somewhat static, but I blame them not getting enough screentime (which is fair due to the sudden influx of characters).

Honestly a big concession I'd make to my own argument is the music. The characters themes helped a lot for me to get the tone of the characters. Though if I remember correctly the tracks often came (at least to bandcamp) sometime after the characters introduction arks. One of those things I could enjoy more in my re read is listening to the various themes of each character

The character themes are quite good. I still listen to Killed By Br8k Spider (Vriska), Fuschia Ruler (Meenah) and Hate You (also Meenah), plus other songs from the comic (Sunslammer and Elevatorstuck mainly). I was doing a read through with my bestie and I did try putting on HS music for her while we read but I couldn't catch the right one for it and Homestuck is so much longer than all of it's tracks put together could handle lol.
